What have you done to your XS today?

Installed a Hugh's handbuilt capacitor and tested a freshly installed corona bottle fuel sight. Went for a ride and found out the fuel filter had a leak in it. Replaced that and were good. Stay tuned for more fun and games. Lol

Hi All,
I took off the Old toggle switch I put by the rt side cover as a "start switch" and decided to fix the starter button on the handle bars once and for all!
.... once I figured out that the safty unit was at fault and no power was getting to the starter sylinoid...I put a short jumper wire to bypass the safty switch
so it would start when ever I pushed the starter button. I like that allot better !!!!
the old button on the starter crumbled into dust when I first got the bike, so I needed a new one... I found a plastic "Wire Nut Screw Cap" (for household wireing) fit it fairly well, so I trimmed it down cut it to length and screwed in a drywall screw into it as the ground post in the button, found a hunk of a small spring I had laying around formed it to shape and re installed it, it didn't fit so I ground off more of the screw till it fit.... put it all back together and
in the proccess dropped one of the small screws that holds the cable tight to the throttle housing... it simply vanashed into the void...it's no where to be found so I left the wireing clamp out and put it back together
tried it several times and it works like new ! So now I don't have to be a contorsionest to start the beastie !
it fired up great and ran like a top again..... seams she is quite reliable now !

Rode the SG to breakfast and then took the long way home. Degreased her and dried her off. Took her to Bario Brewery for Bike Night. Went cross town to Carl's Jr for a late dinner, then home.

Beautiful Resto! What do you use to clean up the castings?

Hi Pete,
It's all pretty low tech, I just use a coarse flat file to clean up the perimeters and even out the surface. Then I use 80 grit to get rid of the file marks. After that, it's a series of progressively finer grits until it shines. The problem with pewter is that it clogs the file quite quickly so constantly using a file card to clean it up. I do have a small belt sander but it too fills up the belts in short order, so I just block sand.
Another warm weekend coming up so I hope to get the other two molds poured (and get my bike on the road as well).

Excellent - and thanks for the info.

Every once in a while I get my snazzy shiny emblems out to just look at them and show them to visitors. The concensus is that you sir are a very talented chap with pewter!

Hope the weather works out for your debut on the road! Today it is cold, wet, rainy and foggy - with a freezing rain/mush warning for tonight but by late Sunday and Monday, it is supposed to be a bright sunny clear 25C (which is nearly 80 deg. F).

Canada - gotta love it!

Seams weather changes faster Up there than it does here Pete !!!!
Well today I didn't do much but I spent allot of time doing it ! LOL I pulled the Aluminum back tail light and fender support Rail ...thing-a-ma-gig....off the XS and gave it a going over with the orbital sander and 100 grit to try and get it purty again... The clear coat was pealing off in many places and big scratches in it from bunji cords were everywhere.... it took about 3 hours of constant sanding with the sander to get 90% of it done
I didn't bother with the inside because ya can't see that anyway, I finished off with 00 steel wool and then wiped it real good with an oily rag
it's allot better kind'a a satten grey but better than the chewed up look it had !
I did some shop cleanup looking for that tiny screw I lost the other day..... it's still eludeing me ! LOL
I expect to find it when I loose the electrical cable clamp that it is supposed to hold down ! LOL that's just how these things work ya know !
Later All

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to mount this with shaved forks. I may just have to get a new left lower to mount the stay.

now isn't that a thing of buity ? Nicely done makes me wish I had one like that ! LOL
..... time to head out and get started on the seat brackets ...the seat should be here next week ! WOOO HOOO !
.....
Bob..........

Thanks Angus. Motolanna is right down the street from me, so the bracket shouldn't be hard to get. When you say grinding, do you mean the bracket itself? I couldn't really tell from your pic...

Well Fooie..... I didn't do anything but clean the crome and oil the side wall of the dry and cracked tires .... other than that Nuttin !
I fired her up and it ran like a top..... nothing to fix there either ! ... so I came inside and watched it snow !
LOL !
Bob.........

HOLY SMOKES Marlin! That's different!

Anyways......cursed at the SG because I could not ride her to the AACME show and meet DanielBlack and Mailman and show her off. Took the truck.

Well heck Marlin.... it's spring time, give them some privicy ! LOL that's why I keep my helmits in the house ! had bees'nests in them 3 times now !
Muddobbers too and they really mess up the lining !!!!! the problem is if ya move them now they will probably leave the young and they'll die
but ya might get away with it .....just put the nest in the same location... mom will find it ! depends on how bad ya scare her !
......
I have 2 starlings over my front door .... that is their nesting spot ! and they'll set in the tree out by the door and glare at me for using the front door !!!
LOL.....
.....
all I did to the XS650 today was start making a Carb Sync'er ..... that's it !
