Will simply unplugging and removing my reserve lighting unit have any adverse effect?
I would like to use that space where it was for something else.
Thanks Bob

That worked perfectly. In my wiring harness it was a blue w/ yellow stripe to a blue w/ black stripe. I fabricated a little jumper and then tested it with and without the jumper in place.
With = headlight works
Without= headlight doesn't work
Thanks again

Bob, removing RLU today looked so good that I did it too ! Made a jumper. My 78e is slightly different so I'm putting up a pic hoping for opinions too. Now I've both disconnected my blk/blu under right side cover(5twins trick) . Also jumped Blu to blu/yellow aft pulling rlu ? Can't test just now as I'm also testing my rectifier..yuk lol

Mailman......................glad to hear you got it working. Yes, the blue was in fact blue/black. I used the 1977 wiring diagram on this site, and the wire looked to be blue for the normal size picture, but now that I have enlarged the diagram it clearly shows the blue/black.

I am thinking of bypassing my rlu and use the space for a voltmeter from a ducati, its a little red box a bit smaller than the rlu, tricky little bugger, what it does is switch a warning light on when the bike is drawing more current than the alternater is making. ie, lights on at idle. As soon as the voltage reaches 12.5v the light goes out, easly wired in and makes use of the lamp fail light. Just thought it might be a little more useful knowing my alternater is charging. Another thing is if the voltage exceeds 15.5v the warning light comes on alerting of possible battery damage due to over charging.

I like your idea. I went with a small digital display instead. I'm not sure how original you are aiming to keep your bike, if you are looking for a resto-mod style then this wouldn't fly, but they are amazingly cheap, seem to be well made and fit in a lot of the factory locations.

resolved rlu wire jumper 78e blu/blk to blu/yel. Nice going mailman ! motivated you are ! -RT

After experiencing a few electronic gremlins, lots of reserch, i decided that the rlu had to go, after making a jumper as described, whacko! all good again...so far.
However one of the anomalies was that the headlamp fail light came on at 80km, irrespective of engine rpm, so i thought using the technique found here;
http://xs650temp.proboards.com/thread/9140/charging-indicator-light
I could use the now redundant headlamp fail light as a charge indicator light, but lo and behold no green wire on the loom side of the rlu plug !? Doesent look like it was cut at all or even ever there, but get this the headlamp fail light still comes on at 80km! Just wondering where it would be getting power from? anyone has come across this? Also theres this little sticker in Japanese just under the light on the dash, I thought might be helpful if translated..

Great thread Mailman! I have been eyeing up that RLU space for my new blade fuse box but did not realize just how easy it was to remove. The new fuse box is too tight a fit above the battery.

Tommy, you may have to do some diagnostics to work out what that lower light on the tower represents. All 78SE/79SF sent to the US, Oceania, Canada and other countries had a White,"Headlight failure" warning light on the bottom of the tower.

US 78SE. Some Countries had a 220Kph speedo

Does either of the red tower lights come on when the key is turned on, then goes out after the bike is started and revved up.??........... As a charging light would

Yeah skull, I've noticed the brake.tail light does just that, so no need for the mod to get the hlf lamp to do the same thing. So I guess I'll start by finding the what it's connected to. A clue might be the red line on the speedo like mine starts at 80km unlike the other speedo shown, my gut feeling was that it was a speed warning light, but have never come across one before. Cheers Tommy
