Could this make the bike run hot?

Sometimes it's possible to not get the points wire back on quite right and the wire isn't insulated from the base - so there's always continuity to ground on the wire even with the points open.

Yes, that and the bolt for the wire sometimes has a sleeve to prevent it from touching the base plate. The bolt and wire must be insulated/isolated from the points' base.

Last evening I get home from work. I take points out of bike they were pretty pitted. Filed them with my point file put them back in gapped them. Tried to static time them. Couldnt get the light to turn on no matter what. What the hell did I do wrong?
Give us some close up pics of the points?

I thought Jim was takin' over and went to put a frame on a motor (it's a SOHC 750 thing). .......

I can't tell by looking.......do ya have continuity to ground with points closed and none when points are opened manually?

I even downloaded the pics and enlarged them....still can't be certain, but it looks like the spring metal and the nut opposite the wire are both in contact with the baseplate:shrug:

PS goin' back to the shop.....

I had my step Dad text me a pic to get it on here sooner. When I get home I will take a better pic.
Yeah, it appears you have the fiber washers in the wrong place and the metal nut & washer are contacting the points' base and the spring metal is insulated. The fiber washers go on both sides of the base and insulate it from everything else.

I had a new set points the static test worked. And timed I think the grey wire running to top points ran wich coil to wich cylinder is what I am afraid I cant remember what coil it went to to wich cylinder.

Got it figured out. Right cylinder only hits on about 3/4 throttle. Not sure Other than that wich sucks for sure. It runs well lol.

Good!

Yeah, I was pondering that miss. Does it miss below 3/4 throttle and ok above that, or does it run ok until it get's to 3/4 andmisses above that on the right?

Can ya switch the points wires at the coils and also the spark plug leads and see if the miss switches sides?
