I am taking my 75 to be powder coated and noticed a fork lock on the stem. Is there a way to remove this without a key. I would like to remove it since the cover will be in the way when coating.

Waiting on parts so decided to get some of the covers started. A lot of work, but here are some before after.

A fuel tank came with my project 75 xs650 and has been painted multiple times obviously. Is there a way to identify whether this is a stock yamaha xs650 tank? are there particular dimensions, or markings on the bare metal i can look for, petcock mounting holes, etc...

after looking around, seems more economical to buy new gear sets off ebay instead of individual...

I will venture to guess that this happened long ago and was driven without 5th gear after discovered. there was no debris in the case, probably came out in an oil drain.

Out of curiosity, what usually causes this?

looks like the gear lock thingy (cant find the name of the part) is broken in 2 places, but there was no debris in the engine case... not sure if im looking at a problem or not. parts manual doesnt show this. it locks into the gears.

Any particular reason for skipping clear coat? Is that not an option with plain spray paint?
