Hello everyone, having read the tech section here for the clutch, I'd love some opinions. I'm getting closed to finishing a bottom end overhaul. It's clutch time . I read that the cush springs can be troublesome... Upon inspection, none are broken from my stock setup. Two of the six have a little play in their positions.

Should this be a wholesale replace before I refit things?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I wouldn't replace them unless they were broken. It's a pretty involved repair and not cheap either. If you want to ease the strain on the springs, change to an '80 or later inner hub with the dampened bottom steel plate. That eases clutch engagement and the subsequent shock or "jolt" the springs are asked to absorb.

No that's advice I can get behind! Thanks 5twins. Something like this version? Which would require a new lock washer, and reduction to 6 plates I think??

Yes, that's the one. It will swap right into your older outer basket and your older plates are the same as well. Yes, you just use one less friction and steel plate (6 and 5 instead of 7 and 6). Yes, you would need to get the tabbed lock washer that folds up against the side of the hub nut. I'm pretty sure Mike's sells them .....

Boy, clutch prices on eBay have gotten crazy. You used to be able to buy complete units for around $25 all day long. I know, I did so a few years back.
