Just joined the forum, had my '80 Special 2 about 12 years. It was imported to UK by Halco in '99 & I'm the 2nd owner since then. Will be posting more info & asking questions soon but just want to try getting a photo up 1st. (yay! it seems to have worked)

Welcome to the site! Nice looking XS you have there.

Halco? As in halco....perveyours of affordable racing parts? You might have a 750 there

Yep, Halco Tuning, the much-missed UK XS specialists. I dug out the original UK owner's purchase receipt for the bike when he bought it in May '99 but it doesn't give any clue as to what they did to the bike. The silencers are definitely theirs. The engine is certainly very sweet. The bike cost him £1800 - a lot for then I reckon. I see I acquired it in Sept '04 for £1300 with 10,000 miles indicated & it's just turned 15k now. It was fate that brought it to me - the original owner had worsening MS & couldn't safely ride any longer so had agreed to sell it back to Halco but Tony Hall tragically died before the deal could be finalised so it was advertised locally & I snapped it up. I fell in love with it on the 20 mile ride home. Sold my KH400 as a result (shouldn't have of course). Nothing has gone wrong apart from a misfire which was a dodgy connection from the ht lead into the plug cap. Starter recently stopped working but haven't checked that out yet.
I have recently become re-enthused to do some mods to it. May change the bars (again) for something more Triumph/BSA shape, bit lower but similar width. I'd quite like a shorty front mudguard but don't know where to source one (must be chrome). The seat could do with re-covering, can get a cover but might see if a local upholsterer could do it in leather. Might go to a Smed Speed oil filter conversion. Would like a softer feel at the brake lever so a smaller bore master cyl. perhaps from a Yam trail bike might do it. Also fancy a drilled brake disc. Plenty of fun to be had.

Sounds like good plans and an excellent canvas to work from. I can tell you've been taking good care of it. I might mention spoking an 18" rim to the rear.
Interesting picture, I've never seen a field that would support a bike on a center stand!

Welcome, great history and great looking bike. tim

Hi Jimbo and welcome,
like they all said, nice bike. And the photo shows that you managed to find an English bike show where it wasn't raining.
Which brings us to, don't bob that front mudguard, it's too short to cope with rain as it is.

Don't worry Fred, not going to bob it. Might bob (or have bobbed) a spare if I could find one or buy a ready-made but haven't any in the UK.. Only just started looking though.
That show, at Powderham Castle, is in July so usually dry although has been rained off before.
Thanks for the comments guys by the way. Great forum, have trawled through all the Lets see the XS's pages, now starting on The Garage!

Welcome, Jimbo ! Nice '80.

I had the same immediate reaction that Gary had; amazing that you got the bike to stay on the center stand in the grass !

Some cool bikes in the background, H1's and such, and I see a GT550 just behind. I checked out one for sale in my neighborhood a couple weeks ago. Interesting technology, but a bit of an ugly duckling.
