Making a Cruse Control.

Interesting ! I made up my own Cramp buster version years ago from an aluminum plate and bent it around a pipe the same size as the throttle (1.25" I think) and left a "L" shape in the end of the long strip I cut out... I put in a carriage bolt with a square shank and smooth rounded head and a washer and wing nut on the other side to clamp it to the throttle .... it worked great.... I thought it would get in the way but with it clamped on the end of the throttle it didn't get in the way at all.... when my hand got tired I'ed just slide my hand down toward the end of the bar and rest my arm on it and give my fingers a break ! the dimensions were an "L" shape cut from 1/8" plate about 1" wide about 8" long if I remember correctly and the foot of the "L" shape was about 2.5" wide also about 1" with the corners rounded..... I don't remember if I annealed the aluminum before bending it but that should be done. makes sure it won't crack on you if you happen to be using 6061t6 plate !
I don't know what ever happened to it but lost it somewhere along the line.... LOL..... I liked it as the throttle could be left to snap closed but take the stress out of holding the throttle out of the fingers and transfer it to the wrist / forearm.... i think i took it off when I made the first of my throttle locks
but I have no idea what I did with it..... it's not like I ever throw away anything related to motorcycles , so I probably made something else out of it ! HAHAHHAAHHA !

or perhaps get waterline insulation and cut it to size eh ? ( if it can be found in 1.25" I.D. LOL) that's a thought !

The throttle lock link I posted is the better way to go. I have the screws on my Italian stuff, and you have to get used to rolling the throttle off as well as on. The thumb actuated throttle lock is adjustable for tension and is off & on with a quick flick of the thumb. As close as you'll get to a proper cruise control. This from a guy whose hands are very bad about cramping up.

I see you used nails but I'm surprised there was no bailing wire involved, lol. Bob, you're a "farmer". I know your "profile" says "old ranch kid", but what's the difference? Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against real farmers who need to fix stuff out in the field to get the tractor back to the barn, but what you do is quite the insult to this motorcycle, or any for that matter. You're a hack, an "I'll fix it cheap with a bigger hammer ....." type of mechanic. Oh wait, I mis-spoke there, I can't in good conscious call you a mechanic. I'm sure you'll take offense here but the way I look at it, that just VERY partially offsets the offense you present to the board with all your inane posts. Dude, I'm sure there are rat bike, fix-up-junk forums out there that might be more receptive to your "doings". The 650 Yamaha is a relatively cheap bike but you can't just pound nails into it to fix it.

I have one on the stock 79 with hard stock grips it works great.
I have used siligrips on about 5 bikes now and absolutely love them they have a cramp buster and are soft enough to really cut vibration. I've put over 8,000 miles on bikes with these grips. http://siligrips.com/shop/ $28 a pair, get the soft. Not everyone likes the look. He's been promising for years to make a "real motorcycle grip but no joy yet.

I got a couple of those out in the garage. They work well but require my hand to stay put, can't "shake out the fingers" so to speak. They are plenty cheap enough.

Something I didn't mention but is important is, when riveting the Henge I got the 2 parts of the throttle clamp together with , it is important not to go too far in the Riveting no more than snug ! because the henge needs to flex easily if you snug up the rivets to where you have to push real hard to open them they will not release the throttle easily .... I left the steel Nails protrude about 1/8" on each side with the hinge parts in the vice.... and cut them with the hack saw ( I also counter sunk the metal under where the Rivet heads would be)...... the trick to riveting is not hitting it hard but hitting it in a circular motion, just denting the rivet over and over till it mushrooms to the shape or tension you want. i used the back of my vice for the anvil sense it was handy and I wasn't hitting it really hard..... I left it rather Loose as you can see in the photos.
If I had 1/8" brass brazing rod I would have used that for the pins as it would give a nice appearance when polished up.
also brass is allot softer and will mushroom allot easier and only 1/16" overhang on the pins is needed, still use a circular motion to the pounding but refrain from a direct doward hit too many times as it will swell the entire rivet and lock it to the parts .... a dab of oil after the wire wheel to clean it up and it's done !

Yep. My brother's 62 Norton 650 Manxman had one. In fact, so did his 650 BSA and his 500 Triumph. I put one like that on my mini-bike. Blast from the past.

...As well as releasing some of the tension from the throttle return spring. This was like doing brain surgery on my FJR1300, a two hour job using fine tools and digging down rather deep into the throttle body area.

I also use cramp busters like many others do, as well as a Go-Cruise, which works well for me.

That's funny. My hand started going numb on the bike, also. Went to a Chiropractor (SP). He worked my neck for a few weeks and it never went numb again. ( using stock original grips BTW).

Yes, some neuropathy issues are actually in the spinal cord. I have peripheral neuropathy in my feet, presumably from chemo nerve burn in my spine. During chemo, I had the symptoms of "Lhermitte's sign", where if I tipped my head, I'd get an electric shock in my feet.

Good tip there, Marlin72xs.

Taking Alpha-lipoic-acid has also helped others.
It removed about 80% of my symptoms.

Something for the members to try...

Yes, always take care of your spine. 20 years ago I fell asleep sideways in a living room chair. After that I couldn't sit or lie down without my right hand going numb and a crick in my neck. Chiropractor and glucosamine, took 3 months to get better. Good to hear from you 2m. Hope you're doing well.
