Exhaust

If I could have my "dream exhaust" built for my XS, it would be 1 1/2" head pipes in stainless, tucking in under the engine "TT style" like the set MAC offers, and the 26" long SS Norton Commando peashooter style mufflers from Cone Engineering. I am a sucker for long, slender mufflers........

So am I. And I hate megaphones.

I was wanting to replace my exhaust since its starting to rust through. Was wondering which one would flow the best as i would like to get some more power out of the bike. Plan on redoing the jets and putting som foamies on with it
In any case, you can expect maybe a 5 percent power increase from a perfectly tuned, totally stock bike, from mufflers, filters and jetting. That would be 2-3 rwhp. And do not be fooled into believing that a stock XS has 50 rwhp. It is not even close. My -95 Ducati M600 dynoed at 53 rwhp with a K&N in stock airbox, Dynojet needles and main jets, and Gualdi carbon slip- ons with a 2" fibreglass wrapped open core. Pretty loud, but not obnoxious. That little Ducati would leave my 77 XS for dead from any speed, even in its current state, se details below.

Another, cheaper power increase may be had from using Iridium spark plugs. This according to Jerry Heiden. https://www.heidentuning.com/xs650-...re/spark-plug-ngk-iridium-bpr7eix-detail.html

Years ago, BMW had a factory sponsored race team running in the old "Battle of the Twins" race series. They found a 2-2 exhaust featuring long gently tapered megaphones worked best. I think aftermarket headpipes and those old Commando mufflers closely replicated that. On my new-to-me '83, I had to find another muffler. I decided to try actual Norton Commando peashooter replicas from a Brit bike place. They are louder than the Commandos because they're virtually an open pipe. You could drop golf balls right through them, lol .....

But, they're not obnoxiously loud, not too bad when cruising. They do "bark" when you whack the throttle open though. They are beautiful too, so I think I can live with them .....

I've got the carbs tuned pretty good for them but will still do some tinkering and experimenting.

Years ago when the torque cones came out i was wondering what effect they would show , i check and found not dyno proof so i bought a send and tested.I was running 700 motor shell#1 cam vm34's and 1 3/4" od & 1 5/8 id . Did nothing for my application. I have on my website http://hoosracing.com/torqueconedyno.html click on them to expand. Now they may help with a stock motor just never had one to try.

Hey none of those hard numbers type posts! This is a feel good thread!
Madness (hotted up 750) has had torque inserts in the for the last year. Up until your post I was feeling good about them.
They'll be back in the bins then next time the pipes are off.

1 3/4" OD pipes on Madness?

I figured I’d revive this thread as it’s not so old instead of starting a new one. I need a new exhaust for my bobber. Currently I’m debating a MAC 2-1 system or something from Hoos racing. This is a street bike running a single carb setup. I’m not looking for huge power gains but if I’m gunna spend money I wanna make it count.

From what ive read the Mac 2-1 is a great system for the money

Go to 650central and go to resources, click on G-String. 3M was doing some testing on the mac reducing the collector size down
to 1 3/4" I believe to reduce resonance in the system. Might wanna drop him an email for details. Years ago at the garage usa that a member modified his mac collector by reducing and it made a world of difference.

As you have maybe seen in the presentation of my XS, the exhausts are not in a so good shape.
Rust is growing from inside and the next big step will be to change them.
I found a website for a provider in the Netherlands and send you what I am looking for.
I do like when the exhausts is longer than rear hub.

For that kind of money, I'd want stainless. Not sure their mufflers are.

Well, the manufacturing is done in Holland, by workers hopefully paid fair wages. Not by cheap labor somewhere in Asia. And the systems carry CE approval, making them street legal in Europe. That matters for some.

Yep, when you know that in some French cities, some noise detectors are installed, you'd rather get approved exhausts...
The only way to get a discount is that my friend (the gray Dutch XS) and I order simultaneously, in order to save some money with P & P.
