    Almost screwed up!

Just finished my restoration after 6 months, insured and registered so I took it for a test ride in my neighborhood. My helmet gets shipped later next week but I just couldn't help myself from a test ride without a helmet. After about 10 minutes I noticed the rear wheel making an unusual noise...

Capacitor, how old is too old?

I have the same points and capacitor from the last time I changed them around the mid 80's and was wondering just how long can I use the same electronics without replacement. The bike is a 77' that I had since new and I'm just about finished with the restoration except for the Pamco. I really...

Whats the best way to install commandos??

I'm finishing up my restoration on my 77 and bought some commandos from MikesXS. Whats the best way to install these things? They gave me a bracket and some nuts but there's no clamp to fit around the exhaust and front pipe. Do I have to bend the bracket to fit? Has anyone else have the same...

    What an idiot!

I've been in the process of reassembling my motor and finally peened the cam chain back in place when I figured I'd look in the Haynes to see if I missed anything. Then I read the part where it says to make sure the valve springs are in the correct orientation before you put the valves back in...

    Piston rings

I'm about to place an order again with Mikes and wondering if any has actually used the Honda piston rings as a replacement for the stock rings. I've read several people suggest but none that have actually used them. Is it worth saving some money vs ordering stock?

Cam chain slipped down into case!

I'm in the process of taking apart my motor so I can fix low compression by lapping the valves. So, I removed the top ok, and then ground off the master link all the while thinking I have to make sure the cam chain doesn't slip into the engine when in a split second, the damn chain disappeared...

    rebuilding carbs

I spent the weekend rebuilding my carbs for the first time in my life. When I opened them up I thought I would have a major mess on my hands because when I looked at the floats I noticed tiny pin holes in them from where the gas/water level was. If you look close, you can see a small split and...

    Low compression

I just gave my bike a compression test and found low: 40 -60 lbs. Gonna have to get a manual now. I don't have many specialty tools but the usual set of sockets and wrenches. What tools would I typically need to start an engine teardown?

    countershaft sprocket

How do I know if the sprocket is worn enough to replace? There seems to be little wear but I have no idea if it should be replaced.

    Engine off the frame

I'm into the third week of teardown and want to remove the engine from the frame. It's only myself working on the bike and don't have anyone else to help me with the weight. My question is what's the easiest way for me to remove the engine without killing myself? I'm the original owner (1977) so...

    Battery box

I just started taking apart my 1977 650 and trying to remove the metal frame or box the battery was in. Do I have to remove the rear wheel and fender to remove the battery box? I've taken all the components off the box but it doesn't fit through the sides where the air cleaner was.
