    Helmet art anyone?

I've been thinking of painting my gloss black helmet.I've seen warnings on helmets not to paint them as it weakens them.Is there good paints you can use?Does it depend on helmet material?Mine appears to be some type of plastic.Hopefully someone out there has looked into this.

    Swingarm Truss - 71 XS650

Keeping the frame looking original while improving its stiffness is my goal. Most improvements will be hidden by the tank, sidecovers, seat etc. Some will be more in the open like the front motor mount but should not be too obvious.

    Swingarm Truss - 71 XS650

I'm planning to stiffen up my 72 so I'll be following this thread closely.I've compared the frame drawings of both the early and later bikes and plan to add gussets to as closely as possible duplicate the later frames.

    Is this a production bike?

Its certainly a good looking bike. With that fuel tank you would be looking for a gas station very half hour. This bike shows that sport bike designers can be as willing as chopper guys to give up functionality in the name of looks.

    RePhased XS Goodies!

Thats great news. When I strip my engine down I'll be sending you the crank and cam.It will probably be sometime next year as I have another project on the go.

    RePhased XS Goodies!

Can you rephase the earlier cranks/cams?Iwould like to rephase my 72 XS2.Apparently you can use a later crank and cam tensioners[probably moe parts required].Is there a reason the early cranks can't be used or is it a matter of not much demand to develop the mod?

Looking for a billet fork brace.................

I will probably do that.I've seen one of his braces and it was exactly the style I want.Hopefully he will make one for an XS2.

Looking for a billet fork brace.................

Does anyone make one for a 72 that will work with the stock fender?

Any opinions on an XS Softail??

I think the grey bike has the right lines. Its more of a bobber than a chopper and not too low so handling should be good.I'm sure some would prefer a lower bike with more rake and longer forks but I think this bike is just about perfect.I know you are working on one style right now but I think...

Any opinions on an XS Softail??

I'm not a Chopper guy,to me if an XS is in good shape it should be restored or mildly modded to more of a Brit bike look.If its rough I've always thought I'd like make a Cafe racer. The red soft tail above and even more the grey one in the link have actually got me day dreaming about wanting...

    Drilling stock rotors

Sounds like drilling the stock rotors will be the best option for my 72.I'll look through the patterns in this thread.

    Drilling stock rotors

How about drilled disks for earlier bikes like my 72?Anybody found disks from another model that would work?

    Let's See The XS's

I won't have my bike on the road at least until next year but I think I will go with the Repo mufflers.

    Let's See The XS's

I've been trying to decide whether to use those XS1/XS2 Repo mufflers or go to the Commando style.I can see you like the sound.Do they look like they might be restrictive?I've heard the later mufflers are quite restrictive. If there is not much if any advantage to using the Commando style I might...

    My build thread - 72 XS650

Are you using the original XS2 engine? If so how did you get it to 750cc?I ask as I also have an XS2 and would like to increase its displacement.

MikesXS Harness Question for 1972 XS2

Hopefully someone can answer your question.I have a 72 as well although I haven't done any work on it yet, I may need a wiring harness. My bike does not have an electric start.Perhaps your harness is for a non-electic start bike.

    Welding types

4130 sounds right.I haven't worked on the small stuff for a long time and never fabric covered aircraft.

    Welding types

I'm in aircraft maintenance so I'll probably ask a certified aircraft welder to do it for me.Fabric covered aircraft usually have a tubular mild steel frame that is probably pretty similar to a motorcycle frame.

    Welding types

I'm glad to know Oxy/Acetylene will work.I want to weld some gussets in the frame of my XS2 to stiffen it and also the swingarm.I'll probably tack the gussets in place with my torch then get someone more skilled to do the real welding with whatever method they prefer.I'm assuming the frame and...

Any reason why a frame couldn't be welded with oxy/acetylene?
