1980 Engine Top End Rebuild

I went ahead and ordered the reg/rec. Everything else seems to check out but I am not getting charge at the battery.

Is there any way to temporarily bypass/remove the bad reg/rec so I can run and tune the bike since my reg/rec won't be here for a week? I can hook the battery to a trickle charger to keep it charged so I am not worried about that but I am worried about potentially burning up other electrical components, especially the stator. Also, would the reg/rec not being functional affect my ability to work on the engine tuning? I would think as long as I have good spark it wouldn't, but in my research I have come across instances of the engine running better with the reg/rec disconnected when the reg/rec is bad, so that makes me wonder.
