77 triple on a 73 frame

It's 1/2" longer, can be done with spacers. More elegant is a stem swap to the shorter early stem or the stem from an XS750 triple. At which point you might want to consider a XS750 front end...

The 77 has larger (35mm vs 34mm) fork tubes also.

IIRC The Xs750 tubes are a tad longer, they used smaller rotors (that will bolt to an XS650 wheel 73 and up) and used 35mm then later 36mm tubes

Ya I just went though this, was kind of a pain in the ass but once you do it, its no big deal.
I put 79 front end on a 74 frame. Ended up swapping the 74 stem into the 79 trees, the problem was then that the upper tree would not fit down over the stem because the stem nut had a bushing on it that the tree was supposed to sit on instead of sitting on the threads. Got the upper tree machined out a little and now Im good to go.

Thanks for the info, just bought almost two bikes worth of parts.Almost all the parts from a 73 and a 77.Just got the 73 frame, and both engines. But 73 motor is stuck,77 motor was said to have been running last year.

Even if that 73 motor is stuck a lot of the parts from it will probably still be good and worth plenty of money. The 256 cam is worth a pretty penny, its hotter than the 447s and a lot of guys like them, "XS1 Cam". Also the con rods and good cranks for the 256 motors are hard too find and there is always someone looking for parts from one.
