I was getting 14.5V on my bike in Texas every day Your car should be doing 14.6V or something's wrong. You said you'd never seen more than 13.8 on anything. Often the problem with car alternators is encrusted stuck brushes - alternator seems to work (produce 14.6V) intermittently.
