bent shift forks

Yes, there's a few things to check.

1st, the obvious. Scoring of the forks' pads, usually a burn zone at the edge or corner of a pad. Or outright gouging, like this:

2nd, while in neutral, proper centering of the sliding gear.
3rd, proper penetration of the sliding gear into the adjacent gears.
4th, smooth sliding action on the guide bar.
5th, the fork's guide pin fit into the shiftdrum grooves.

Also, ensure proper cotter pin installation...
