would the tci work on the 81?

Yes it would however. 82's have a seven wire plug to accomadate the sidestand cutoff switch. whereas the 81's don't have this switch, so they have a 6-wire plug. That being said you would have to change your harness over to a seven wire plug and just cap off the black/white sidestand wire. Its a pretty easy mod and I have the plug from the original harness that I can ship with the TCI at no extra charge.
