Okay I will admit that I am at a loss, I’ve read numerous posts here regarding starter problems involving a clicking sound. Let me describe what’s going on with my 1977 original 650, when I turn the key on the ignition the neutral light comes on, make sure switch is on run and when I press the start button all I get is a clicking sound. The bike will kickstart and run flawlessly, here is what I have done and observed:

1- it has a brand new battery totally charged
2- press starter button and clicking sound comes from relay
3- checked fuse and it’s okay
4- disconnected and reconnected all wires around relay
5- disconnected and reconnected battery ground wire
6- checked starter cable all is tight and connected
7- used screwdriver with solenoid the starter turned and worked perfectly, bike started right up

What am I missing?

I’m not sure what it is, hence my post here, thank you for the lead. What made you think it is the solenoid?

Sounds like your solenoid has burnt or dirty contacts inside. Not usually repairable unless you are handy. The fact that it’s clicking is enough to tell you the circuit is working, just not passing current. When you short it it spins the starter, so battery and starter wiring is good. Hope it helps.
