Building a bobber out of my '79 xs650 special. It will be battery-less/kick start only and I am only planning to wire the permanent magnet alternator, the capacitor, the headlight, and the taillight. No ignition lock cylinder just a hidden kill switch. Also, the headlight will have a generic toggle switch. Can you see any reason why I would need my wiring harness? Thanks!

Nice to use plug type connectors for major components. But other than stripping out wires to reuse the factory harness won't be part of your build.

Three things you need to do if you want your bike to be happy.

1) Throw out your old corroded harness, buy new wires and heat shrink.
2) Get yourself some new bullet connectors from here.
3) Learn how to make a proper crimp, use heat shrink.

Enjoy

Thanks for the replies all. I will take the advice. I am good at harness making and soldering. The link for bullet connectors did not work for me.

Anyone have a source for the various colours of 16 guage wire. I can find solid colours all over town but the colour combinations??

That's why you reuse the wires from the stock harness. Most of the wires are ok, the connections are were the corrosion is.
