engine painted and ready for install

i sprocket cut the fins with a dremel
i used a round toothed carbide bit
and then small 1/4" buffing wheels to polish all the teeth
i have a standard dremel, also used a 90 degree head dremel and a pen dremel
then painted the whole motor and used q-tips with laquer thinner to go back and wipe each tooth clean

this was a long process

couldn't you have painted first, then do the dremel work?

we make custom spike kits for all bikes
i have several spike kits for the xs650
i stock chrome, solid brass, and we also do powder colors
this engine has blue candy coat powder over chrome spikes

lower engine side cover kit - $75
exhaust spikes - $10
top oil line spikes - $30
head & top end - $65
crankcase - $45
cam tems. cover spike - $15
spike tach cover - $15

thats a lot o spikes!

we also have axle kits, fork top kits, steering stem
you name it we spike it

tadd

i thought about that also
i had a spare cb750 motor here that i practiced on a bit
the dremel is not smooth and definitly not precise
thru the process i got better but it did want to jump out of teeth
and weird angles would always have you bumping into different things
plus when i polished the teeth it left behind a good amount of compound on the fins , top and bottom
the best way i found to clean this was lacquer thinner
and that would have removed the paint from the fins

I have Steve's spikes on my bike and they are really nice. Quality of the chrome is great and steve was great to deal with. Steve your motor looks F N bad ass. Is that transparent blue powder coat on the spikes? I was thinking about doing mine in black chrome powder.

bill
yeah buddy, blue candy looks awesome
i tried getting some black candy
but the really loked just kinda grayed out
the red, blue, green, yellow, purple candy colors look great over the chrome
saw your last pics, paint and assembled - looks great also :yikes:

Damn nice; I see Black or Brass in my future.

Love the Blue engine!

glad to hear that
going for a real retro 70's chopper feel on this bike
so i thought the blue engine would be unique
besides if i were to paint 1 more flat black engine i may shoot myself

I hear ya, I LOVE black everything, down to my ALL black CTS, but it is popular now and I want something totally different!

There are NONE of these bikes around here, so that wouldn't be an issue, but I am thinking about going totally different!!!!

yes, lacquer thinner has been my best friend on this project
i do have a little cleaning up to do

i have said it for years now and just wanna throw it out there again
if you are painting your engine
i highly recomend "plastikote" engine enamels
i have used it on at least 30 engines over the years and it always comes out great
stands up to oil, gas, and road use
i have painted entire bikes with this stuff and love the results
a little hard to find now days
but i special order it from Lowes
again just my .02 cents
