I am attempting to clean out the petcock on my 1981 650. I am not sure how the fuel selector lever is held in place. I removed the chrome cover plate and removed the metal spring washer and I think the lever is simply held in with an o-ring and I should be able to pry it out. Sound correct? Trying to avoid any damage.

You might want to look at gggGary's thread on rebuilding them to spec. I've had one fail twice and I don't trust them. When they fail, gas leaks, profusely in my case. So I removed the white wafer piece and the plunger and spring and diaphragms and stuck the two halves together with gasket paper between them using Seals All. Then put a lawnmower fuel valve from Autozone in the line to be able to turn it off. Works great and doesn't detract from the looks. Still have Run and Reserve. Worth mentioning that the fine threads in junk metal holding that plate on strip easily -- best bet is a longer screw of the same diameter with a nut on the other side.
