Can anyone assist. Just bought a XS 650 engine. Apparently it came out of a 1983 xs650 Special Heritage model. Can anyone tell me where the engine numbers are stamped on the xs engine. Also I need to get a rotor and generator. Behind the left cover, all I have is a bare crank end showing. Seems to be various different types for the XS 650, and I have no idea which one i need for this engine. Any help appreciated.

The engine serial number is on the lower front of the motor, on the motor mount .....

But that will only I.D. the crankcases for you. Many of the other parts (cylinders, head, side covers) are easily swapped on these. Your cylinder does have the later single outlet breather but it also looks to have an earlier style cam chain adjuster. An '83 motor would have had the type E adjuster with a lock nut. I see no lock nut on yours. That means it could have been swapped to an earlier type D adjuster, which doesn't use a lock nut, or the cam chain could be so stretched out that the lock nut had to be removed in order for the acorn cover nut to be fitted.

Your choice of an alternator would depend on what ignition you are going to use. If you use the stock TCI you will need the stator/rotor with the pick up on it..
If you are going with a pamco the stator and rotor from a points ignition will work.
Re: the cam chain adjuster, the OE for that year was black like the motor so it has probably been swapped like 5twins mentioned.

Thanks for your help. I will clean paint off crankcases and see what I can find. I've now found a rotor and generator etc which I should receive this week. Will also check out the timing chain adjuster. Stripped the top end off today as I was told the bottom end had a knock. Sure enough . . Right hand big end bearing shot. Close on 1/4" up and down movement on con rod. New crank assembly it is then.

Anyone know how difficult it is to rebuild a crank assembly and how much in parts it would cost. Is there any specialist tools required to do the job ? It's a 447.
