Help me identify a carb.

I recently bought a 79 xs650 special with out carbs. Today I found out a buddy has a 83 heritage special that he is chopping, he offered me the carbs but I don't know what kind off carbs they are and if they will even work with my 79. I heard I could use the bs34s or the bs38s. Is that true? What does he have?

Yes, you can use either. An '83 would have BS34s. You will need to get new (different) manifolds as the inlet size differs between the 38s and the 34s. Or maybe your buddy will include them with the carbs?
