Kick Start? Far oooout, man.

Hey guys,
I'm ALMOST done with my second tear down and rebuild of this thing (hooray!) and am putting the kick start mechanism back in. I know it's notorious, but I think I'm doing it correctly. I don't have any pics (and am having trouble finding any online) of how it the shaft should sit coming out of the side engine cover. Should the splines be immediately outside the cover? Mine has about 1/2 an inch (maybe 3/4) of shaft coming out of the cover before the splines start. I think I put it in properly but something about that extra bit of shaft seems off to me. Anyone have any thoughts or pics? Thanks.

That 1/2" sounds about right. I just checked mine and that's what I have. Besides, if the assembly wasn't seated in far enough, you wouldn't be able to fit the cover tightly to the motor, there would be a gap.
