Kick start spin-out

Funny thing happened on the way to work today. My battery was a bit run down so I gave it a bit of help kicking with my foot and the engine started right up. No problem.

Except that on the first decent right turn I was startled by a scraping sound and stopped the bike. Fearing the exhaust has disconnected, I looked down and I see the kick start lever had wound around and was pointing at the pavement.

I managed to pull it back up to its normal position and carried on.

The same thing happened on the way home but I was waiting for that.

So what on earth is happening here and is it easily preventable?

Any help would be very nice indeed.

Thanks gmiller for such a quick reply.

As it turns out, the spring is fine but the kick-start lever was fouling on the foot-peg arm, preventing its return. I put on Omars "ugly plates" and there was too thick of a washer installed behind it, pushing out the foot-peg arm too far.

Problem solved and case closed. Sweet! No money involved!

Thx again gmiller for for speedy reply.
