Had a 1982 XJ650RJ Seca. I had a similar issue (clean air and all) and used aluminum (aluminum for across the ponders) pop rivet washer to lift the needles.

That's a long , hot, flat hump from Y2P. I've made it myself countless times and have seen some of the strangest things ever imagined on that stretch of road.
Fell asleep on the bike at night. Woke up in the next lane. Promptly pulled off and stretched out on a sleeping bag for 20imutes of shuteye.

At night you could be the only headlight for miles in the 70s. Clean dead bugs of headlight and face shield every half hour or sooner.
