My precious money pit

thanks for the link. I'm definitely going to do mine if I can find a pillar drill to borrow. They not only look superb they improve braking efficiency too. Its a win win .
thanks for all the info.

nice. It reminds me of a hemi oil pan upside down. anyone feel that? Wonder if that could be easier starting point.
hear ya on the budget thing. If I didn't have to rebuild the motor, I would have stayed under 1500$. My own hardtail, common gas tank, reuse the electrics. stock front end. So far Im guessing about 2200$. That's only in parts. not oils, lubes, gas, carb cleaner, my hourly rate, lostt spooning time with the mrs., Dead braincells from carb cleaner/exhaust in a closed g-rage..... on and on.is fun, though.

I installed new bushings on my swing arm. Its too bad the brass gets buried to where you'll never see it.

Too much away time from bike. I finally got my forks apart to rebuild with new tubes, seals and emulators..I shaved and polish the left lower right side to be polished asap . My bro welded up the 17 mm. tool for the job. Thanks to Hugh and his tech thread with pics on this, I feel like a pro now. Lol.
No really , Hughs stuff is totally inspiring.
More pics of my progress coming soon.

Square Circle,everything looks
perdy damn sweet!
the seat pan n tank look great together.
I used the same pattern on my front rotor.
I still have to do the rear I didn't have a pattern for it.
yours look cool with the gold center

Thanks Carbon, tinker n with these bikes takes a lot of time.. seems like I can hardly get anywhere with it. I'm not even going all out with chopping bobbing or fabricating like some do. My expectations are to get it rideable as a cafe by early fall.

Hey guys, I'm installing my refurbished swingarm.
I had a bad time removing it. the pivot shaft was rusted up with the frame and I had to beat the crap out of it . This caused damage and I had to buy a new shaft.. I dont ever remember seeing any shim/spacer when I took out /off, maybe someone (p.o.) lost them..Do any of you guys know what thickness these shims are(#4 on diagram)? I have new seals with built in washer like backings, but when I test fit arm, there deems to be a bit of slack, Do you think I could use the old seal metal backings as shims? Thanks .

Thanks. That's a good thread. Did not know that only about 1 out of 8 or 10 xs650s had those shims in the swingarm from the factory. I guess my bike did not have them either. The fit was tighter than I realized without them, and everything bolted up just fine.

Nice upgrade ,let us know how big an improvement in handling , solid bushes have made .

Getting a few more things bolted up. I gave the chain guard some speed holes. Not perfect, but cool.forks rebuilt with Mikesxs cartridge emulators.

My speedo broke. needle sheared and the gears are toast. I bought a mini from Mikesxs. What is the fuze for on the back top side of OEM one? Fun reconfig with the wirings. Yea!

Not a fuse, that's a reed switch. Just yank it, along with the turn signal canceller, that's only what that switch is there for...

Cheers

No gears inside to brake. There is a magnet in close proximity to the speedo drive

Had a bit of progress tonight.Having some fun checking out my new adjustable clubman bars from Omars..I'm stoked with the look and sporty feel..I have yet to get my rear sets together, paint seat pan, front fender and side covers and sew up a seat cover. It will never be finished. But I WILL ride it soon.

Man..the weather here in St. Louis has been super mild and pleasant for bike rides..to dang bad MY BIKE IZ STILL IN PARTS...LOL. so I took my forks back off the bike and installed Hugh's 2" lowering kit, and put in Race Tech straight rate springs along with the damper rod mod for emulators(Mikesxs ( R.T.knock offs) I have no idea if this is going to handle well at all.. haven't checked sag yet. New Hughs alluminim solid riser bush's too.Stuff looks neat, but I wonder if its rideable.

Got my front wheel back on and installed the T-Kat fork brace..looks kool. Meaty. When I rebuilt forks, I put in AllBalls fork seals, I have found out that the dust boot the seal kit contained was not tall enough for the stock fork..fortunately the low profile dust boot was perfect for the brace..It's nice to find some things actually work out for the best.

Do tell, what weight spring did you end up going with, 1.0kg or .90kg?
I ask because I just ordered a set of the .90kg today, but I based that on my bike being a 'one up' ride as opposed to your cafe style.

I got the 90. I think the guy at Race Tech said the 1.0 was no longer available for the xs. I could be wrong. My weight with bike gave me an 87kg rating, so I guess I' all be OK with the 90. Or I,all have to diet.

pushing the limit of my fabrication skills with these aluminum blinker brackets . Made them from 3/16 bar stock..no welding needed. They bolt up at rear fender mounts.
