After wishing I could take a crapy looking bike and make it awesome for cheap I discovered the xs650. I was blown away. Other people are already doing what I wanted to do.

So I was wondering what year sx650 is a good starting point to build a bike like the ones in the pictures bellow. What should I look for in a project bike? And what is a good price for an old xs650?

I'm looking to get as close as I can to the bikes in the pics for under $1,500 is this possible?

Any advise is more than welcome as I'm completely new to the xs world.

The XS craze is huge. They are easy to work on, aftermarket parts are everywhere, and the knowledge here will get you through anything.

The price for the end result will depend on your building capabilities. Can you weld? Do you own a grinder? Alot of things will play into this.

As for a bike.... look to get yourself a 650 that runs... if it runs when you buy it, it will be cheaper for a first time build. Keep in mind, the more complete the bike is, this will give you more parts to put back up for sale and make some money back.

I can do it all. I've painted cars, mig and tig welded before, plus my mom was a state certified welder 10 years ago. I'm almost done with my assoiciates degree in auto tech. I don't have a lot of tools. I don't have a welder either.

I'm thinking a xs650 from the 70's would be the way to go. I like the TC bros rear end. Get some straight/drag bars, and paint everything flat black. This is what I have planned for starters.

The cheapest for you would be an XS650 that someone tried to build a chopper out of, they are on CL and KIJIJI all the time, no one buys them, should be had for cheap...

"XS650 Chopper for sale, 90% done, just needs the last 10%, and then you will be driving off in the sun set...."

a quote comes to mind,--- The last 10% is 90% of the work....

As others have said, find one that runs.
No title = parts bike.
Do a build like those posted for under $1500, not likely.
The XS650 has gotten very popular for rebuilding. Everyone wants one. This drives the price up.
Getting a running XS650 under $1500 can be tough. There are still some out there cheap but finding one is tough. Usually found accidently.
