What is the benefit to adding this instead of running the stock ignition? I am buying a 1980 model xs650 and just curious if it is just for replacement of a faulty ignition.

Yes and no. Yes it is a replacement for a points ignition. It won't replace your TCI ignition.
For the TCI, Pamco has a set up, but not the basic. Check out his site.
