quesrion about the frame

Is the piece of metal that wraps around the back bone of the frame (where it curves down) necessary? It seems any hardtail kits I've seen say to leave it on. I'm doing my own fab work on my frame and would prefer to remove it.

It's your bike do as you please.
I think they suggest leaving it to make it stronger were the tail gets welded on. The same reason the factory did.

I took mine off and I'm not dead yet. But, I made my own tail and used a longer shallower angle so there is more area for the stress to transfer to the backbone.
 
What I am thinking of doing is cutting out the section between the back bone and shock mounts. Then weld tubing back in following the angle of the back bone and using an old king queen seat from an old triumph chopper I had. Basically re-designing the rear of the bike. Maybe I have too much time on my hands.
