My high beam never worked on my bike so I decided to check it out and sure enough the bulb has blown. I am just wondering what headlight my bike uses or if there is one that I can use instead that would be a brighter and fit directly in. Here is the back of the lamp.

Thank you for your time.

I think most any 7 inch headlight will fit. I like the one Candle Power sells. They come in 5 3/4 and 7 inch. They use a replacable H-4 bulb in a new reflector.

I have theCandle power headlight in my 75, but yours has the W clips holding the light in, so that makes your an early version and it might not fit. I think yours doesn't have an adjuster screw in the chrome ring the headlight mounts into.
RG, on the first few years the headlight used a different way of mountinmg the bulb, I also think the bulb was different sized too. Not sure if bigger or smaller. Maybe R33 can measure his bulb, the Wal Mart bulb is 7 inches in diameter, his might not be.
You might consider getting a 75 up headlight bucket. I think some of the 80 up bikes had the bucket chromed. Most years it was painted to match the other tinwork.
This way your headlight will be adjustable left to right.

When I take off my headlamp inside the bucket there is a screw inside there with a spring. My bike is a 1981 but I didnt replace the headlamp unless the guy before me did.

I think I may have found it! Looks like it could be the headlight from a 1976-1978 Yamaha RD400. I am just going to switch it out for a different headlight. Any suggestions?

The headlight in the pic you show is not an 81 headlight. The 81 didn't use the w clip to hold the bulb in like the one in your pic has the w clip in the upper right hand side. I have one right here in my hand. It doesn't look like your pic.

Just checked boats.net and the RD400 uses the w clip. I still suggest getting a headlight bucket for an XS650, from 75 up. It mounts the same as the one you have but I know it takes the 7 inch headlight.
