Can anyone tell what year this stator is from? Also how reliable is the xs650's electronic ignition? Is it best to go aftermarket? Thanks

The black oval component is the ignition pick-up coils for a TCI (Transisitor controlled ignition). They were used for 1980 to 83 models in north america.

The TCI is a good system and many riders use it. However, as any electrical components age, problems can occur. The TCI has a black box mounted under the battery. There is no way of knowing how reliable they will be. Use the "Search" box in the upper right corner to find lots of info on TCI.

The original TCI system worked great for me for years, it's the charging system that sucks. If you upgrade to the PMA, you have to change the ignition to a pamco or boyer etc...

Just because it has an 80 up stator does not mean it's an 80. I have an 82 stator on my 75. The way to tell the year is by the frame and engine numbers.
There are many number lists to tell the year. Mike's has one.
