After an eternity of preparation I am finally ready to turn a room full of parts into a motor cycle.

The frame has had some lugs cut off and some new ones put on, however it still weighs a ton.
DSCF0112 (800x583).jpg
Got the motor in the frame with the help of a friend.

Fitted the triple clamps, the top one took all my spare time for 3 months to machine.
They are 41mm to take SV650 forks and stepped to make up for the shorter fork length.
The offset I settled on (46mm) works out with a 17"wheel to give 100mm of trail with the XS's 27o rake. It's a bit of a guess as to how well it will work but hopefully I have enough adjustment to iron out any unpleasant surprises.

Next on the agenda is to fit the rear guard and swing arm.

Fitted the rear guard, it won't stay transparent for long but it will do for now.

The standard possibly previously over tightened pivot bolt is likely to be the next weak link up the chain after beefing up the swing arm and bracing the frame. So I used an aftermarket bolt that is not necked at the thread. Bracing the frame and changing the swing arm is probably overkill on what will be essentially a road bike.

Fitted the electrical gear tray, the charging system is LC 350 I used the downloadable template for the stator winding mount from the XS 650 Club of Australia website and it worked well.

The breather system is roughly a copy of the one Craig Weekes describes in his excellent publication (some of the best money I spent on this bike buying that) pity I had started before it came out.
I need to get a few hose clips and other bits.
If it's not too cold during the week I will get out in the shed and do a bit more.

I am about to hit the electrical system on my build and that tray is very clean... makes me think...

I will be watching this thread. Thank you.

Didn't get much done this evening but did manage to put some stripes on the wheels.
Those have got to make it go faster .

Rocking the Party, Brian and Limpy thanks for looking in and the comments.

Hopefully it won't be too long before I start the wiring. I didn't do it as part of the dry build so it may take a while, but the diagram and most of the components are sorted.

Got the rear wheel and brake mounted tonight as well as the forks and the headlight mounts. If I can round up a lift for tomorrow night I will get it up on its wheels.

Then I need to drill the carbs for balancing barbs, fit them and the alternator before the pipes go on.
A new front disk is on its way to me but won't arrive until the 19th.

Those rear shocks don't really work and are only temporary to hold the back end up during assembly.

Wow, definitely subscribing to this one. Your level of craftsmanship is outstanding. Well done!

lookin' good. it appears you have the breather line routed out to a filter located above your rear tire. i would be concerned of oil dripping out of the filter and onto your rear tire. might not be much or even an issue but something to keep an eye on.

RetrolLS1, thanks looking in and the comments .

Racer Dave, the tank is an Omar's his XR 750 style one. I bought it off Phil Little so you can see I have had it a while. Concerned about ethanol and the tank I contacted a couple of oil company's here, from what they told me ethanol is not added unless it is stated on the pump.

The tank mounts have been moved to give a better steering lock for low speed manoeuvring.
The 41mm fork tubes hit the tank on full lock so just to make sure there was some wriggle room the steering stops are cams so the lock can be adjusted independently on each side. Hopefully it will save one of those awful oh no moments in the last stages of assembly.

Deadchef, yes a self-lubricating rear tyre would be nasty. I will keep close eye on it but hopefully the oil will condense in the catch tank and run into the clutch cover. The catch tank has an internal baffle to stop blow through and there is a PCV valve in the line from the condensate tank to the breather.

A few more things done this week, fitted the alternator, drilled the carbs for barbs and mounted them on the bike.Got the ignition static timed

The new front disc arrived (about a week earlier than expected). This weekend time permitting the plan will be to fit the disc and the exhaust pipes.
Need to sort out a chain as well, the plan is to use a 520 Xring at least I think that's what they are called.

Doing the little jobs soaks up the hours; my uncle once said to me that motor cycles were devices of the Devil in that for every hour riding you had 10 in the workshop. Fortunately I find doing this stuff relaxing.

Hi, Brian yes it is a Probe 83L with the integral rev limiter. I have an earlier model in my road XS. I am a huge fan of them.
Ryan and Street Tracker thanks for looking in.

Brian, Yes I thought that was a great idea and actually drilled and tapped the head. Then I decided to go for one of the big fin 750 barrels.
Unfortunately the larger fins deny access to the holes. So it was either machine the fins or drill the carbs.

Today was one step forward and one step sideways.

Forward:
Got the lower engine bolts torqued up but left the top mount loose for now.
Mounted the coils on brass spacers to help conduct the heat away from the cores, I don't know if they will make much difference, but they look shiny.
Put the exhaust pipes on, it took a while to remember what went where but had a win in the end.

Put the right hand cam cover on. I wanted to use a Shell one but they didn't reply to my enquiry so I made my own. Next time I will cut the thread off the cam that holds the mechanical advance in place like Mule motorcycles does so a narrower one can be made.

Started getting the back brake assembled.

Sideways: Put the new front disc on, the braking surface sits in the same place in relation to the hub but the centre boss is about 3mm thicker on the outside.
The disc mounting bolts will now hit the fork lower and my calliper adaptor plate bolts hit the disk boss.
After work on Monday I will gets some button head cap screws refit the wheel recheck the clearances and then have a think about what to do next.
