I did a quick search but did not find what I was looking for. Is there a good write up on taking out the plastic bushings? I have the swingarm cleaned up and on the bench and ready to go do I knock the shaft out of the center and then just punch the bushings out with a punch? Don't want to mess up any thing.

Thanks, Nick

You could try tapping them out with a long punch (I'd use a brass rod to avoid scarring the inside of the swingarm) after removing the steel sleeve. IIRC, I partially sawed through mine with a hacksaw blade held in a pair of visegrips. 2 cuts 180 deg apart from each other, and the pieces pried right out.

Thanks Liftrat, The outer metal sleeve is what I was worried about messing up. I was going to find a old socket that fit the Dia. of it and take a dead blow to it but wanted to see if there was a better way. I know that the bass bushing upgrade has been done a ton so I figured there was some info on it. After this is done I am redoing the neck bearings as well.

If they are the originals you're gonna have to use a hot wrench (torch) or do the hacksaw blade deal and take them out in pieces. They WILL be very stubborn.

Search "bushings" in the tech section and you'll find a ton of these.......................

when i did mine, i used a long 1/2" drive extension bar as a drift, they came out easily. i guess it just depends on what kind of life it's had. cheers

I also used a socket on a long extension to knock them out from the other side. Take your time.

Try this. Insert a small, 5" to 8" square piece of cloth, ( old t-shirt or rag material), into the swing arm after removing the long metal bushing. Then take the metal bushing and push the rag through until you meet resistance. Using a rubber or nylon mallet (not metal) keep driving the metal bushing. I found it wedges and pushes the plastic bushing out.

Read through this it covers most of the removal methods. I am partial to my method..........of course.

Thanks for the Link gggGary I have been busy so have not had time to try any of the methods yet but I will be getting it done tonight or wednesday night. Does the metal sleeve come out pretty easy thats the only thing I am worried about I am going to repaint the frame and swingarm so I figured I would just use the torch method to remove them.

Thanks for all the info, Nick

The metal sleeve out easy Yeah USUALLY if the PO kept up with grease they slide right out, on other bikes I have had to sledge hammer the pivot bolt all the way out.and have seen anything from shiny like new to rusted mess on the sleeves.

Torch doesn't work as well as you might expect. I think the bushings are some sort of plastic/metal matrix and are not very "melty".

My method was to hammer a nail between the plastic and the metal which cracked/tore the plastic and let it come right out. Right sized nail is about 3" long or a bit less.

I've had great luck with using a torch. They don't exactly melt away, but they do get really soft and then you can just push them out with a drift.

Bushings are out. They came out rather easy I used a really long 1/4" extension with a 15 mm on the end to push out one side then put on a 18mm to get the other out. Now I need to get the old neck races out.

Thanks every one for your help this site has been a great help, Nick

My special tool is........... usually a hammer and screwdriver.
Note; the new tapered races are different top and bottom. Drive the wrong race in the bottom and good luck getting it out, the ID of the race is nearly the same as the ID of the neck tube no "lip" to drive against.

I used the same tool a 1/4 socket extension and a old socket and beat out the bottom and then flipped my frame over and did the top. I have my frame striped to weld on the brat kit from Visual Impact so it was easy to get to both sides.

A foot long piece of all thread, 1/2 size, with nuts and washers puts bushings and races back in straight and easy.
