1982 650 new and working boyer ing sysetm however not chargeing at bat is it possiable to test output of alternator befor iot goes into regulator rectifier
 
Yes, Follow the wire bundle up from the alternator. You will come to a big connector. You will find three white wires going into and out of this connector. Number them 1, 2, 3.
Using your multi-meter on the AC scale, bike running, probe into the connector on the alternator side along by these white wires. From 1-2, 2-3 and 1-3. You should get around 10+volts AC. Probe on the harness side of this connector to compare to the alternator side. Any differences means a dirty connector. Clean it.
There is a charging system trouble shooting guide on here some where, I can't do links but you can find it in the XS650 TECH section. Under Electrical.
Follow the steps to test the entire system. Fix the things you find wrong.
It may be as easy as cleaning a few connections to replacing some parts. Often the brushes are the thing. Sometimes a rotor. The 80 up reg/rec and stator seldom give much trouble.
