I use cigarete lighter with alligator clips that go on battery terminals. Then I run USB cord /charger up to my phone on bars. It's removable and use it to charge my phone on long rides since my phone is my speedometer.

A fun little project. You can get some cheapo cig-lighter/usb charger from Wallyworld, and salvage-out the guts. Normally not very complicated, just a tiny 5v/500mw regulated power supply chip and the USB socket, usually on one tiny printed-circuit board. Additional features could be an LED indicator and on/off switch.

Don't let it intimidate you, it's really simple, think of it as wiring in an indicator bulb, just +12v and GND.

I had a phone holder for a phone I no longer have. It had 2 USB charging ports in it. Salvaged it out and fitted them into my Tahoe's dashboard. Newer stuff is quite smaller. The switch allows either constant-on or IGN switched power...
