What have you done to your XS today?

The patch is from a small group of Triumph patches I bought in a British bike shop in Boston in the early eighties. Didn't I sent you one of them?

It’s one of my prized possessions! :) Proudly displayed above your bike in my rogues gallery!

Here’s another patch I have , that I like. From the Bonneville.com website, I got it when my bike was featured on that website. That bike was also a calendar bike, I was very proud of that. It was also a very fun bike to ride!

Had some fun with my brake caliper. Also updated my shifter , I played around with this brass piece I was going to put on the shifter, not too sure now. o_O. Then I experimented with adding copper stitches....which was successful.... maybe do it more somewhere?

I was going to play with my SR but decided to finish bolting on some parts that I hadnt done since I last played with her and got carried away. Finally got a complete gauge set connected in, replaced and gapped the tappets as they had nice flat spots, replaced both fork legs dust caps, found and corrected a bent rear brace for the front fender.
So hopefully tomorrow Ill set the cam chain adjuster and fit the crank case breather and she should be ready for rego.

Put it all back together after cleaning carbs and then fixing leaking petcocks... now the right cylinder isn’t running all that great. It’s not dead but something appears off. Like almost dead. After a minute I can still touch the pipes and it’s warm but not hot. Also I’m started the bike with the pipe off and I hear a bubbling sound. I’m at a loss here guys

isn't the "bubbeling" normal? nearly every bike engine I've heard with the exhaust off makes that sound. Even mine lol. Put some exhaust on and see if it still does it.

All that engraving....that is art. I would call that motor cycle tattoos.
I'm curios..show me the whole bike.

Thanks Okie, I'll definitely post a pic once everything is done. Currently I need to grind on my handle bars and possibly my points and vavle co

Got the bike all put back together today, went on a little 10 mile ride. About two miles from home it started to jerk when giving it any amount of throttle. Came to a stop and looked down, spark plugs wire on the right hand side had just "fallen" out of the cap. So looks like I'll be replacing those soon.

Need to get the oil changed like yesterday.

Also been looking for some different handle bar options, either want some drag bars or mini apes, does anyone have pictures of these on a stock bike?

Worked on a few details today; after my bar swap last weekend the throttle wasn't snapping back, and since they are black painted bars the starter and horn weren't properly grounded, so today I re routed the throttle cable, took up the slack In the wires going into the headlight bucket, and sanded the paint off the bars so I can use my horn and starter. Also spent some time using styrene plastic to make bulb braces for the inside of my cheapo chinese turn signals. Then I went for a really short ride with my daughter, but it was so cold out it wasn't even 10 minutes. @Ccconrod, take a look at my new bars, and heres some pics of my bike with my older setup-TC bros Lanesplitters, pretty much mini apes.

I think or hope I am doing my last bike project. At 82 years old I can barely find my way around the shop.
But I would like to hear this XS650 run one more time. I have always likes Dunlop K70 tires. Is that a good choice for a stock '81 XS650?? I ask because K70 was mentioned in this bobber article. I realize they are tube type tires.

That's awesome. I can only hope and wish I'll be doing the same at 82. Keep up the great work....

I am pretty healthy for my age. I mow a lot of grass during the summer, acres of grass, plant a large garden and stay busy out doors when the weather permits. 40f is cold to me. I have arthritis in my wrists and my vision us about half what it was a few years ago. If I drop a small item I have a hard time finding it. I am going to clean the carbs on the X S650 soon. That will be a challenge. I know my limits.. My old friend, now deceased ,said about drinking "I know my limits but I always pass out before I get there".

finally got her running today. This is the first time I ever heard it run. Definitely the coolest looking and most certainly the coolest sounding bike I have ever owned. Shes a bit dirty and raggedy looking but that's nothing that can't be fixed easily. Time to break it in...after I figure out why the clutch is disengage and certain points. I forsee myself removing the side cover. I dont think I assembled it correctly.

Great that you have a runner there ! I see great potential to make whatever style you like out of that 77
Nice going !

I plan on just making it look a bit more modern with some LEDs and maybe just back out the fenders. Maybe put a smaller battery in it and relocate the electronics and make rooms for some storage where that huge battery is. Nothing crazy.

From what I’ve heard, you don’t wanna go messing with the battery size. They’re barely big enough as it is. I’m sure some of the gurus will chime in soon enough. Congrats on the startup! Seeing one of these old engines come back to life is really something.

You might be able to go with a smaller AGM battery, but if you ride more than warm sunny days avoid lithium batteties. If you only kick start you would be fine, but below 50*F the lithium batteries start to need warm up time and struggle.
