I'm close to re-installing a refurbished Starter in another bike and I was reviewing this thread I started.

In the attached pic, have I got the shaft seal installed properly (where groove is facing outward)? Or should the flush side of the seal be facing outward?

I'm 2nd guessing myself. Not clear to me looking at parts drawings...

So as to conversate with myself, I believe I have the seal in there correctly after looking at a starter for sale on eBay:

and also from reviewing a definitive thread (XS650 Electric Start System) from inxs that shows the S 17-28-8 Seal positioned in the cover/end plate.

Yes, you have the seal installed correctly.
