I just picked up a 1972 xs2. The forks are all there and complete but the tubes are rusted badly from sitting. I have found a pair of forks (only the forks) on Kijiji from a 1975 but I want to be sure they will fit before I have them shipped 400km.

My forks have a large nut on top that holds them into the top triple, and the standard pinch bolt on the lower triple.

If the 75 has a clamp in the top could I just swap in my caps?

Thanks for the help

The short answer is no they won't interchange.
Caps are different. and so is the lower RH leg, the 72 has a one year only full floating rotor, with a sleeve that is held to the lower by a jam nut. The lower has a different axle hole ID. I believe there are differences at the damper also, so the tubes themselves won't swap at either end. Sorry.
PS the 75 steering stem is longer also, so even a complete 75 front end with triples and wheel would involve some custom machining or a grind, swap, weld of steering stems.

I "think" The only interchange years for your tubes are 72-73 I have not done a full physical comparison between the various years. The fiches are a bit sketchy on these parts!

The diagrams and descriptions do not always match, but;

This Yamaha 306-23124-60-00 TUBE,INNER 1 is used on these models and components:

1972 XS2 FRONT FORK (XS2) (TX650 - )
1973 TX650 FRONT FORK (XS2) (TX650 - )

This is the inner tubes, not the RH lower. That RH lower is 72 ONLY. AFAIK the LH lower does interchange 72-73

Forking by frank is an option but a pair of tubes is over $300 with shipping. Re-chrome your tubes? For the money I would look into a later front end, complete.

Not familiar with anyone reporting back after using them.

Are the width of the trees on the 72 7.25 inches center to center? If so you might be able to swap your upper tree for a 74 up upper tree, then you can use 74 up forks.
You would just have to use a 74 up wheel. The 72 floating caliper wheel won't work with the 74 up forks.

73 to 74 the steering stem gets longer..... Oops just the upper, I'll compare the spread and offset.

I know the stem got longer but the width is what I'm not sure about. The 75 front end I have measures 7.25 inches center to center.
If the 72is the same you might just swap upper trees, keeping the lower in place.

Good idea Leo but it's a no go. Width, offset, stem hole diameter, all different.

pics are 72 and 75 top triple compared,

It's lonely being a 72 fork.

Also the 70-71 are narrower center to center than the 72.

After 2 many called me on it; 70-72 are 175mm then 73 to end of production is 184mm cl to cl

It looks like the most cost effective way to get it bouncing up and down again will be to just order a set of tubes from XS650direct (Mikes xs in Canada). Get seals as well and try my hand at rebuilding the forks.

Just so it doesn't get lost, here's the 'other' thread:

Interestingly, the parts manuals show that the 70-71-72 top triple (Crown, part #8) are the same.

See changed post above, 2 many is right 70-72 are 175mm c to c
73 on are 184mm. Need to get those dims EXACT but the width change is 72 to 73. guess We need to revisit that other thread 2 many points to as well.
This makes the 73 triple a one year part.

More sleuthing needed.

CF: Glad the wise ones were able to answer your question.
