Yam_Tech314's official build thread

Just an FYI - on tires the first number is width, the second is height, and third is diameter. So if you want to adjust the ride height through the tire you want the second number to go up. Personally, that isn’t a good way to adjust the ride height. Now you changed the overall wheel size and the gearing is based on the overall tire/wheel. And now you are changing sprockets, altering the gearing even further. Adjust the height through the forks and rear shocks. Also remember, adjusting only one will change the rake and trail and the bike will handle totally different.

Good call... I'm just gonna run this:
Shinko 712 series
Front: 100/90 r19
Rear 130/90 r16

I'll make the rear just a bit wider than the front, which I feel is normal, then I'll keep the height the same and have a good basis to measure my ride height as a roller. It's just really hard to get a good visual of ride height when the bike sits on rims only.

Here are a couple of pictures of YOUR wheels mounted with a cheap set of Mikes junk Monza shocks.

shocks 14” eye to eye
Front: 100/90/19. Might be a 110, can’t remember for sure.
Rear: 130/90/16

hope these help with your visual.

I was staring at these pics A LOT yesterday. Wondering "what tires did HE have on these?" I like the stance of the bike in the pics. Not sure how tall I want the bike to be right now honestly... I really don't think there's a way to know until I get tires on. Thanks for reading my mind and sending the info Willis.
I just finished this somewhat. Are we ever really done with a bike? Title says it started its life as an ‘81 special. I got it with just a frame, 3 wheels, and motor
How do you avoid chain rub on the swingarm? This is a problem that was brought to my attention on this thread, and from the pic it looks mighty close to contact with that swingarm. Great stance on your ride as well, I like the angle here as well. Did you lower your forks in the triple tree?

I think the rear was a Dunlop of some sort. Front was a Goodyear Trailwing. I never had a chain on mine so I can’t say either way. I think you would be good with 13.5” shocks though.

If you are ordering tires online, I’d like to suggest Midwest Traction. I got good deals from them in the past.

good luck!

Keep your chain in spec is how you avoid it rubbing. The first pic is recent and the other two are from a while back. I kept stock sizes (17-34) but went to a 520. So in that pic I hadn’t set the chain or even touched the drive. Honestly, older bikes - hell, all bikes - have pros and cons. This is my first XS650 and the whole final drive has issues in my opinion. The chain is so close to the case under the stator cover, the shift shaft, swingarm, and tire. If it gets slightly out of spec it’ll rub everywhere. These are old bikes and not perfect but super simple. Oh, I did not drop the forks. Raising the rear gave the front a better angle and is way more nimble.

Jim, I'm trying to do some homeowkr in the garage today... Making a draft of a total parts list.

Can I use a 20° 10mm compression banjo fitting for both the front and rear calipers? I'm using -3 SS brake lining when I'm ready for that, but the angle of the fitting stays the same for front and rear calipers?

EDIT*** FORGOT TO ADD QUOTE.

Another stupid question .. but how well does a banjo fitting have to fit over a bolt? Should it be tight? Or should it have a good bit of room to move? I feel like it should have wiggle room, but I also feel like that could cause it to leak... When I measure the bolts for my hardware they're all between .350
and .396.

I'm only asking about this all because I'm preparing to purchase compression fittings for my braking system because after a long day of thought and some beers, I've decided to completely finish the rolling chassis before moving on to engine and electrical. Meaning I want tires on, and brakes stopping and starting. After that, I can take as much time needed to chip away at the motor slowly.

For that to happen I gotta set up my brakes. Is it safe to say that 10mm banjo fittings will work with each one of my banjo bolts??? It's about .04 of a gap between the bolts and the I.D of the banjo fittings... Maybe I'm just being too careful, but I don't like wasting money

I'll get to then tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.

Can't help but feel like I'm a needy sonuvagun sometimes. Just didn't realize I'd dive this deep into it.

I need to remember how far I've come. I got pretty pissed off today looking at the bike and realizing I couldn't find the other bolt to the front brake caliper mount. Made me wonder what the future of this build looks like. I know now what I need to do differently for my next build. So that helps.

Sooo.. I'm kinda spoiling what I've been up to today, but there's things I need help with... As usual.

Who knows why there's metal in this hole separate from the hole itself? Should it be removed?

Also, hindsight is always 20/20 but I used water for the case halves today. Like, submerged in boiling water. Loosened up a ton of dirt for easier degreasing. But there are apparantly small bits of steel in the motor I didn't take notice of. Will this little bit of rust matter?

You guys get the cool pics later on for now I just wanna show what needs addressed
