At the risk of getting flamed by the purists... thought Id share my afternoons work.
I wanna run a really clean looking bike and had seen guys on the forum mentioning about JB welding the yamaha logo etc and also that it could be ground down. I decided to have a stab at it today. came out great! i still gotta finish the higher grades of sanding/wet rubbing but i think it'll come up nice. I was going to black out much of the engine but i really spent so much time building it and everything else that i didn't want to compromise to save time and labour I'm gonna polish the engine (some of it) and silver coat the case halves depending on how they come up soda blasted.

anyways to get this look all i did was hit it with a small grinder to start to take out the dome there's plenty of wall thickness there so as long as your careful it can be done. the logo seems to be deepest at the start and finish so i had to dig a little deeper there.

after that i hit it with the bastard file to flatten out the dome a little more and flatten out any highs from the grinder. i got it fairly flat, there was still a minor low spot at the start of the Y but it will be hardly noticeable once its finished

i moved on to the sanding grades then 80,120,180,240,400, then 400 wet and dry which is what your looking at now, ill 800 and 1200 then buff it out.

also got my clutch pack from ippytattoo so got that sorted and replaced the cush springs too.

making some good progress this week. Its been a long build but should be worth it when its done. had a stroke of good luck too whilst trolling the forum noticed a thread on the little push rod dowel under the star wheel/gear selector and how its seated to allow oil... also noticed i had buttoned mine up wrong the same as airwolfe did in his build so was able to use iamcarbons trick and glued a bolt to it to retrieve it! saved me hours and major hassles later. love the forum!

so far Ive had the head sleeved to 707cc with JE racing pistons, new rods. I redid the valves, rephased crank from Hughs Hand Built, PMA from HHB, pamco pete ignition,i set up a Hydraulic clutch from a pitbike setup, 8 pack clutch from ippytattoo, new tranny bearings, all new hardware and bolts, mikuni VM34's, aluminium velocity stacks, custom ceramic coated intake manifold, got a billet aluminium top triple clamp fabbed up, brembo front brake upgrade (single disc) its all going into a hardtail frame with a 21 inch front and 18 inch rear. its kick only no battery just a sparx capacitor. I've done most everything myself other than the rephase and sleeving. built the engine from the bottom up and cleaned and serviced every part, and replaced what was worn out. its been fun, big thanks to hugh, ippytattoo and all the forum gurus who have saved me some hassles along the way, couldnt have done it without you all, will post more as we get closer, should have a rolling chassis finished in the next few weeks and the engine buttoned up shortly too so can start putting it all together.

ill try and stop being so slack and start posting some more picks once i cut the neck gussets and start welding the new frame bits in place.

i also took off the "kickstarter" logo as well... i did leave the "made in japan" on the other side though... its my little :boxing: to all my harley riding buddies after i smoke em' off the line..

My bike has everything that said yamaha covered or taken off. I just wanted people to wonder what it is. Even tho its painted in the king kenny roberts paint scheme I have had people asking what kind of bike it is. You can see how I did my yamaha delete on the dakota tracker thread.

man thats a tidy tracker.. thats my next build after this one i think, i got an 81' basket case that'd be prime. twin disc setup etc. I love those keeny rogers colours.

Hi Apache,
although I've never felt the urge to hide a bike's origin, kudos to you for removing the writing while not grinding a hole on the casting.
(Remember the Kawi twin that was such a dead ringer for a Gold Flash that folks were grinding out the Mfrs logos and cutting in piled rifles?)
Closest I ever came was the "kickstarter" label on my 1980 XS11. Bastard didn't have one, eh?

Have a look at the sidecover on the very early XS1. Where's the "YAMAHA" imprint?

i didnt realise the early ones were like that ? mighta saved some time.. assuming it fits and you could find the elusive piece.. but it was more about customising MY bike... ive had my hands on every nut and bolt, ive scoured the forum and performed every mod i could to make the bike the best it could be. I love my yammy and when its done i'll be proud of it and know that i did most everything.

im fairly fluent with CAD and design programs as well so im thinking i might etch my valve covers with my own little flourish too.. maybe another "made in japan"

oh im not even slightly concerned about the yamaha thing... i just love how clean that sidecover looks! I'd do it again. I ride and build my bikes for me. Its my own private world where I can do as i please. I could care less what people think, my buddy who's helping me with my hardtail runs a custom shop specialising in metric choppers all crazy custom built stuff.. his cb360 is one of the nicest little choppers I ever seen, he does a nice triumph too. Ive never owned a harley, havent felt the need. I love my XS it can be a bobber, a chopper, a tracker, a brat style its the most versatile bike ever made. You can rephase it or run it stock at 360* HD can kiss my ass.. ha ha

Now dont go bashing on harleys. Ive had brit bikes jap bikes german bikes swedish bikes and american(harley) bikes and Ive had a blast on all of them. I was 21 years old when I bought my harley and that is a very influentual age. I had so much fun with my friends when I had that bike. To me it doesnt matter what you have as long as you have fun and ride the hell out of it.

That is one nice 360. Bars are...different.
As for logos, Ide love to get rid of the big Yamaha on the clutch cover. But most Ive seen ground off look strange. especially when polished back up. May I suggest scotchbrite satin? Sometimes it looks like something is suppose to be ther, I.E. flat spot on a other wise round (kind of) cover.
For a flourish, Maybe a rising sun?

yeah i hear ya, this ones not too bad.. i shape surfboards for a living and spend a lot of time blending curves with sanders, and planers etc, so ive got a reasonable eye for it. the proof is in the pudding though. i'll post up a pic once i get the bench top polisher setup and buff it back, we'll see if i succeeded or failed..

dont get me wrong i love harleys too.. i just cant afford them. bikes are crazy expensive in australia. a basket case harley is gonna cost you minimum $5K... ouch
