Thanks grizld1. I wasn't sure if what I was thinking was possible

    Single petcock and vm34 carbs

Potentially silly question. I'm looking at putting a set of vm34s and I've got a replacement petcock from mikesxs (https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-petcock-non-vacuum-type-oem-447-24500-02-00.html?fits-motorcycle=Yamaha/XS650/all-models/1980). I'm having issues finding a tee locally and...

    Starter Gear Fix!

If my memory serves that's where mine was by default. I saw a video where it was suggested that you actually put the loop back in the groove for it but there was other gearing in the way when I put mine back in so I left it like your image. I didn't want to tear things apart if I didn't need to...

    Starter Gear Fix!

That's correct. I could never get it to that tension but it is still very improved over what it was.

What have you done to your XS today?

Thank you Marty. Guess it's time to go shopping. I've tried polishing the side covers before but with the clear coat it never looks good. That's why I started with the grab handle. I've seen a lot on eBay if this one goes south.

What have you done to your XS today?

Did some polishing today. Just got the grab bar done as I got interrupted part way through. It's not as nice as most of the polish jobs I've seen on here but I'm pretty sure it's never been polished. I've attached before and after shots even though the lighting is different. I started out with...

1980 Yamaha XS650 oil leak and electrical issue (with video explaining)

I don't know about anyone else but I've battled the no neutral while running forever. Mine is fine until the engine gets really warmed up then I have to fight it into 2nd the lightly tap into neutral. There's a clutch adjuster on the left side just behind the alternator (should have a little...

    Timing with a pamco.

Thanks for the idea RG. That worked like a charm. Got the bike out for a warmup run, adjusted the idle timing to bang on the F, had my wife bring the throttle up to 3200 (which she had issues keeping it at a steady RPM), and it's pretty damn close to the where Pete says is the full advance...

    Timing with a pamco.

Thanks 5T. I'll set the timing tomorrow after a warm up ride (if it ever stops raining). I need to figure out some way to strap the bike down so that it doesn't keep trying to walk away while when I bring the revs up. I'd tie it to the bench but I fear it'll just pull the bench across the floor. :)

    Timing with a pamco.

Looks like I didn't seat the locating pin for the ATU to guide onto properly so my guess is it was slipping under high rpm causing the lack of advance. Still haven't got it timed because it's pissing rain so no warm up run but a cold timing showed the timing marks advancing. But I do have a...

    Fuse is blowing

Ah yes, I was reading on my tablet and just saw headlight bucket and rubber. My bad.

    Fuse is blowing

It's basically a grommet and I don't think Mike's carries them. Even new ( I replaced my bucket as the old one was beat to hell), the grommets tend to want to fall out as you put all the wiring through. I'd think you could get away with layers of electrical tape to get rid of the sharp edges on...

    Timing with a pamco.

I did try both plug wires on the idle timing but didn't see a notable difference and I think I tried it when I was trying to get the advance timing but I'll give that another shot. The bushings came as part of the pamco ignition kit and are smooth brass. Thanks for your help 5T
