Great! Are the petcocks in steel thread bungs or just in the glass? Do the petcocks have a reserve and a internal standpipe /screen? Thanks Pre.

Petcocks are threaded into a metal insert, and they are either on or off, no reserve. standpipe? no idea. can't see thu the glass.:D

pregrid,
I have to say your are the reason I am here on this forum. That is one beautiful bike and a spectacular build. I now have the need to go find me a XS650 and get started on building myself one of these street trackers! Thanks and I look forward to learning all I can here to get it right the first time.

Welcome, and this is the right place. there are many helpful people here. And thank you, it's truly been a labor of love. There are certain years that are easier to do a street tracker on than others. go to Omar's web site for a ton of info.

Dave,
Thanks a million. I have been on Omars site and have sent him an email to get some of his literature and anything I can to get a great start. Coming from a racing family back in the 70's its been a long time my Uncle was national number 37 in southern California Ron Moore he ran with all of the legends at Ascott and San Jose mile and many others. Those guys are all still out there running legends races in their 70's, just goes to show crazy does not ever really go away!. I don't live in Southern California for the last 30 years or I would have probably had one by now. Been riding my H-D Ultra Classic for many years but would have a blast riding one of these around here locally.

Well Dave your memory serves you well you know right where I am. Its still really nice here on the central coast thats for sure. Anytime your down this way let me know. I am coming up that for the Sacramento Mile you going?

Looks like I may have found an 81 for about $500 no take or seat. Looking to see how this registration thing will work out with no title. Looks like it is possible if the damn thing is not hot. Trying to figure that all out now. PM or email me if you have any thoughts or ideas. I did a search here and found some information.

Not goin' to the Sac Mile this year although flat trackers on the mile is insane. You'll enjoy that.

Before you buy a bike I highly recommend you give Robert at Omar's a call. Go here:

http://omarsdtr.com/

Just make sure you tell him Dave from Fremont told you to call.
i just talked to him and he's stuck in Chicago right now but he'll be available Wednesday. He can tell you what models easily convert and what to watch out for. He can also give you info on registering a bike without a title. He's only 40 or so miles from me and since he recently retired from his day job he's a lot easier to reach. the guy knows his shit and has been instrumental in helping my build come to life. If you're gonna pass near the SF bay area on your way to Sacto PM me. Like to have you stop by and I'll show you my shit.

Peace, out
Dave

Made a few changes in the last coupla days. Changed the rear sprocket from a 34 to a 36 (the 34 gave it way too much leg, especially from a stop, due I'm sure to running a 19" rear wheel). Took it on a short putt, didn't make a huge difference but it was noticable and I'm sure it's gonna be more ridable. More after a longer run.

Installed hugh's hydraulic clutch conversion. All I can say is WOW! Pull is much easier and if the clutch doesn't fully disengage (after making all the proper adjustments prior) you can screw the lever adjusting screw in to give it more throw. A full report to follow after a longer ride hopefully tomorrow.

Changed the pilot jets to 30's to hopefully eliminate the high idle when warm. Again, stay tuned for a more comprehensive report in the next coupla days.

Took it for a 10 mi putt, wow! Clutch is great now, Hugh don't lie, neutral is SO easy to find, cold or hot, moving or stationary. Like the gearing, not a radical change but I think I can actually use 2nd gear in the tight twisties. Engine runs better cold, idles better hot, still gotta pull the plugs, may have to still make a small adjustment on the air bleed screw. Took some new pics.

Sorry for braggin', but I'm REALLY happy with the way the "Blue Deuce" came out. And I gotta say it again..........this place rocks! Could not have done it this well or as easily without all the great help from this site. I'd mention names but I'm sure I'd forget someone, 'sides, y'all know who you are!

Dave, a few ?'s about your carb kit from MMM. It looks like you have the Magura throttle housing ? If so 91* or 103* rotation? If 103 what is the reason for the slightly more rotation? Any reason, aside from more $$, that you didn't use the aluminum racing manifolds? I know they are about 1 3/4 inch longer, which may be an issue, but hey the ZOOM factor is right there with them!

By the way, nice looking switch housing on the left bar side. What brand is that?

:laughing::laughing:

I'm sorry, your post just brought up an image of me and my son in a store when he was just a little guy. As we walked he kept pointing to things ans asking "whazzat?, whazzat daddy?"

Sorry man, I REALLY don't mind you asking questions, just had a flashback. The throttle came from Omar's and if you open it up you can choose between the two degrees of rotation. I chose the "enduro" setting, the longer of the two, 'cause it's easier to control on the street than the 1/4 throttle mode.

Not sure why I didn't use the hi-zoot aluminum manifolds (how's THAT for a non answer?)

The switch is a Baja Designs unit, p/n 12-9028

Hey Pre, why did you, whoa, :oops:! Sorry teach!

Picture little RacerDave , standing in the corner, nose against the wall, repeating 100 times:

" I will not ask the teacher so many questions"

:jk::cheers:

'Nother upgrade. The throttle has always seemed rather stiff (like I was pulling two carbs or sumpin'!). After riding for only 40-50 miles or so I was ready to pull over and rest . MMM has the cure. Softer carb return springs. Wow, what a difference. $7.00 for the pair and to anyone who's using VM Mikuni's I highly recommend them. Return is still very positive but the load on your wrist is greatly diminished. This fuckin' thing just gets better and better! I hope my experiences will help someone down the road no matter what they're buildin'.
