Has to because that battery wouldn't produce a spark with the old Alternator. Lights are off, there is no power going to anything but the ignition. Before this was happening I COULD start it with the lights on.

Yes a dead battery can an will stop you from kick starting, especially when the ignition components are 30+ years old. You can have spark but its too weak of spark.

You are way over thinking this. It's not going to effect your performance in any way. Simply there to reduce heat coming off the pipes and for looks.
