    Dazed & a bit confused

Well thanks to all that offered suggestions to find what was going on. These things are always a matter of elimination & having differeing perspectives means you're sure to cover every potentiality. I finally tracked the issue to be electrical; (Jan_P called it!) There was a broken internal...

    Dazed & a bit confused

OK guys thanks all. So I’m landing on a blocked vent in the tank - when I take the bike tank off & use my workshop fuel tank, the bike runs fine. I’ve checked the voltage and I’m seeing 13.v at idle & 14.6 off idle. I’m now quite comfortable that the ignition and the charge systems are working...

    Dazed & a bit confused

I shall do so and thanks for suggesting this - Even having lived and worked all over the world and being back here for 8 years now, I forget how wonderful NZ & the South Island is for riding.

    Dazed & a bit confused

Thanks all. I’ll get an inline spark tester and see what that tells me. The charge system is a new Mikes XS stator, rotor and regulator - I’ll get a voltmeter into the system and check this also. The coil is a new one that came with the ignition system and I believe both to be OK - I swapped...

    Dazed & a bit confused

Hello all and Happy New Year to all; It shall be a good one. Now back to the saga of the bike:…. I’ve now eliminated I believe many if not most vaiables that could cause the erratic running of the bike. I am satisfied that the fuel, plugs, ignition and charging system are not causing the...

    Dazed & a bit confused

Cheers Gary - yep TDC still OK - I set TDC off the Shaft (keyway to bottom) & scribed TDC onto the rotor from Mikes as it does not come with TDC or timing marks; kinda frustrating !

Yes recent compression test - compressions seem fine at 150psi per side

    Dazed & a bit confused

Well I have to ask for the great wisdom of the group again. I rebuilt my xs650 xs650B (actually was a box of messy bits, but that is another story) into a "cafe racer" for want of a better description. The engine shows reasonable compressions at 150/ side, the head and valves were...

    Horn issues

Thanks all for the responses; greatly appreciated. Wiring is a dark art on these beasts; nothing is as it seems. So the grounded handlebars feature here - even though as 5Twins sagely notes, if the ground is out the starter should not work. But it did… However when you put a multimeter across...

    Tri Spark ignition

Hi there; I thought the forum may be interested in this - I'd like to shout out for TriSpark ignition systems out of Australia. I've two xs650's and fitted MikesXS charge igntion systems to both. One ran, one would not run right , no matter what I did. So, I went and brought an ignition system...

    Horn issues

Hello all; On my standard unmolested 1975xs650B I'm having horn issues; that is it does not work. It did, and stopped. I've checked the horn itself; its fine when powered directly. I've check the wiring from the horn up to the nightmare of spaghetti inside the headlight and the wires are good...

Hello there ; I imported an '75XS650 B from the USA nto NZ around a year ago & its in pretty good condition & looks like it had a rebuild some time ago - frame had been powder coated, wiring redone etc. Engine had evidence of work done ( new gaskets observed and clean, new oil in motor) to get...

    It lives

Well apart from a few bits on the snag list, I've finally finished my project bike. Started with a box of bits brought as spares for my other XS; I saw what was there & thought " I can geta bike out these bits". The theme comes from the original frame having "Made in Japan" on the downtube...

The dark arts revisited (or how to correctly wire a regulator recitifier)

Thanks & apologies - clearly my eyes and colour are challenged! At least I can now complete this first part of the rewire !
