    Early Cam Chain Guide

I searched some threads on cam chain guides and found some information suggesting that guides for "early" (70 to 73?) bikes are different, possibly due to clearance issues. Online parts sellers like Partzilla, CMSL, and Mike's indicate one guide for all years (not that I trust these sources...

    Drive Sprocket Torque

My factory manual lists the torque for the drive sprocket at 36 ft-lbs. Seems low, especially since those nuts seem to have a tendency to come loose. I searched for this and found some threads that mention 75 to 80 ft- lbs. What is the best torque to use?

    Oil Pump Wear

Inspected the parts to my oil today and noticed that there is wear/scoring on both the shaft and cover housing. Being a steel shaft rotating in an aluminum housing I'd expect some wear. Is this typical, or do these parts need to be replaced?

    Yamabond on Seals

I've read through a few treads on replacing seals, and for some seals it is recommended that a thin smear of Yamabond be used on the outer surface. What Yamabond is recommended here, Yamabond 4?

    Starter Gear

While I'm waiting on parts to replace my cam chain guide, etc., I thought I'd tackle the starter gear issue. Does the grind/spin thing. The PO replaced the #4 gear with what may be a Mike's XS or similar aftermarket gear. Clip only has about 4 lbs of pressure so that is most of the issue...

    Cam Chain Guide

Pulled my drain plug and oil strainer cover today to find the dreaded cam chain guide bits. When replacing the guide, does it also make sense to replace the chain as well since I'm already in there?

    Petcocks

I pulled the tank from my 78 XS650SE to clean and repaint it. At some point, someone replaced the original petcocks with the type available from Mike's XS. They leak a dip or so when I switch the lever between off/on/res, etc., so I figured I'd clean and rebuild them while I had everything...

    Front Shocks Question

I just drained the oil and pulled the front springs from my 78 special. The springs that were installed appear to be progressive springs (probably not stock?). They were installed with the end where the coils are closer together at the top. I thought the end with the closer coils when down...

    Front Fork Springs

Looking to replace my stock (and tired) front fork springs. I found a set of Progression Suspension springs from 650 Central for $97 or a set of Performance Progressive springs at Yamahaxs650.com on sale for $40 (normally $45). Both sets seem to have the same specs, but big difference in price...

    Front shocks

The front shocks on my 1978 special have been modified into air shocks. I checked and there is only a couple of psi in there now. Is anyone familar with this set up? I'm wondering if it's worth keeping, or should I just going back to a stock set up. Any info would be appreciated.

    Headlight

I just bought a 78 Special. The front turn signals are angled back on both sides, and I doubt they are supposed to be that way.. I'm trying to determine what the issue is, wrong headlight bucket, wrong brackets, or what? I any help would be appreciated.

Looking for a XS650, preferably 1972 or earlier. I'm not looking for a basket case, but I don't need a pristine one either. I'm in Northern California; but will travel for the right bike. Serious buyer. Let me know if you have one you can part with. Thanks.
