1983 XS650 New Owner and That Famous Whirring Sound

Hello All, Just recently purchased a 1983 XS650 that had been converted to a hardtail bobber here is South Jersey. No idea how many miles are on the bike. So far as I can tell it has an XS PMA Charge System and a Pamco Ignition installed with the mechanical auto-advancer. Looks like the frame...

What's this noise coming from my engine? (video)

So my bike fell over not too long ago and before it did it did not make this noise. Before it fell the timing chain was tensioned correctly and valve clearances were in spec. I've just recently re adjusted the cam chain tension, but haven't adjusted valve clearances yet. I don't see why they...

    Right side engine noise

So i'm honestly not sure if this noise is new or maybe I just haven't noticed it before. Cam chain tensioner/valves done correctly about 500 miles ago nothing on the bike has changed. It isn't a distinct metal knocking nor a carb chirp but its something in between the two. I can only hear it...

    Rattling noise from engine

So I have this rattle noise in the front of my engine. It increases as I rev the bike, it doesn't disappear when i'm up to speed its just that I can't hear it. Its very noticeable at idle. I searched the threads and from what I found the cam chain guide is worn. I took it a trusted shop (because...

    Top End Noise

So I just adjusted my cam chain tension and set my valves on my '75. I hear this noise coming from the top end. Seems to go away off idle. Granted, that may just be because the bike is louder. It sounds a bit worse in the video, but it is still concerning. Any ideas what it is? Thanks!

    Engine noise

I have an 83 heritage special, less than 10k on it, pamco (advance rod and unit), 2-1 that cane on it, not sure what kind, and Jet kit. , was running fine and then It started making a noise, my front guide needed replacing so I did that, but the noise was still there. My back guide has some...

Cricket Noise In Engine All the time

I just got my hands on a 1978 XS650 Special with about 32k on it. I know the valves were worked on and the carbs rebuilt, but I noticed a unique cricket noise in the engine that I've recorded on YouTube that you can watch here: You'll want to watch the video the whole way through to...

    Does this sound normal?

Does this sound normal? FIXED So that's the noise; I've adjusted the cam chain, valves and ignition timing in that order. Haven't got to the cleaning the carbs yet. It has contact points as well. What do you guys think?

    Rubber In The Fins

I read somewhere that XS650s came from the factory with rubber blocks wedged in-between the cooling fins to control harmonics and reduce top end noise but none of my XSs have these rubber blocks. Anyone know anything about this or where the blocks might be found?

    Loud Pipes Are Killing Motorcycles

Okay, argue all you want but the fact is: loud pipes are killing motorcycles with petition drives and legislation like in the following link popping up all over the country: http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110917/GJNEWS_01/709179956/-1/FOSNEWS Oh sure, this doesn't apply...
