Does anyone have the knowledge/expertise to remove chrome plating at home, rather than trusting it to an electro-plating company ?
I've read of various different methods, reverse electro-plating, acid dipping, even just grinding off the chrome.
I fully realise that some chemicals are strictly restricted due to public health/toxicity/pollution concerns, probably a big can of worms.
This lovely side cover is at the top of my hit list

From seeing all the corrosion, I’d be looking for some used side covers
It's got rust, but by my reckoning it aint rotted out unless the rust has eaten all the way through, and it's nowhere near that.
Blast it.
With a shotgun ?
That will probably remove the loose chrome and rust, but leave patches where it's still stuck

Old thread but I think the best that would fit the bill.
Thanks, Grewth
I'm going to try removing chrome from a headlight bucket, (experiment) 30% muriatic acid 70% water.
The interweb says freezing point of -15F but I couldn't find another source to be sure.
I'm working outdoors and need confirmation; very doubtful I'll see -10f but It can get close.
Sure don't need a mess. Indoors a definite no go.
If it works a bigger bath then fenders and gas tank.
I'll do before and afters to show progress if it works.
Any info please.
Thanks
JD
