Removal of unwanted chrome plating

Does anyone have the knowledge/expertise to remove chrome plating at home, rather than trusting it to an electro-plating company ?
I've read of various different methods, reverse electro-plating, acid dipping, even just grinding off the chrome.
I fully realise that some chemicals are strictly restricted due to public health/toxicity/pollution concerns, probably a big can of worms.
This lovely side cover is at the top of my hit list

It's got rust, but by my reckoning it aint rotted out unless the rust has eaten all the way through, and it's nowhere near that.

Blast it.

With a shotgun ?
That will probably remove the loose chrome and rust, but leave patches where it's still stuck
