I have a big Palo Verde tree in my back yard, and here in Arizona we have Palo Verde beetles that lay their eggs under Palo Verde trees, and then the grubs grow under ground and feed on the roots of the tree. The beetles are some of the largest in North America and can grow up to 3 1/2ā€ long. When the weather gets hot, they begin to emerge. They only live for about a month, they mate, lay their eggs and die. They are harmless but when they fly they look and sound like a small plane and can be quite startling if they fly towards you. Tonight I took the dog out in the back yard and found this guy just crawling out of its hole, it froze when I got too close.
It surprised me when it almost immediately took flight , it did a couple circles around the yard and then flew off!
