ORIGINAL 1970 xs1 found in factory packing crate

Tyrant - Nobody will think you are a hippie transvestite in that hat.

Little Bill, we're good! I was kidding you yesterday about the Asian thing. Good comeback with the Irish line.

Skull, we often disagree, but I recognize your mastery of the history of the xs, which I can clearly say is Way above mine. However, I know we will never share the same taste.

Scrambled -
This one's dedicated to you

Frames are built with a gusset for a reason, removing them leaves you with the potential of a broken frame some time in the future. all the stresses converge into that area.

leaving out a motor mount on an XS650 will create more vibration through the frame and more stress on the other mounts

lots of people who chop and bob do it without caring about safety and the other associated problems. of course if it is for a sale project it doesn't matter because then the problem is passed on to the buyer

that "gusset" is just a tank mount the tube that the top motor mount attaches to is what does all the work.

I'm an old timer, and I like the bike. All the comments on the seat, and the ugly rust but not one person mentioned the ugly ass TC Bros hard tail?? Gotta be the wort looking tail in the hobby?? It looks good on that bike though (Rodney Dangerfield impression).

Fong bros, I have mad respect for u as a bike builder but lost respect for u as a person with UR comments about Texas. Us texans are the nicest most respectful people. Why cus the state because of one douchebag only to look like a douchebag urself.

Dandan, pretty sure I was drinking. Beer and message boards are not a good combo for me. You are correct. Can't take back what I said. I even have a bike in Texas and the buyer was a perfect gentleman. Please forgive my statement to one, I got sucked in and was being stupid.

Yah Austin is a whole nother ball game. The southern hospitality here is pretty outstanding. Although there are a lot of people flocking here and changing the atmosphere. But the people that were raised here the old fashioned way are extremely well mannered. Only thing Austin is good for is hitting up for the weekend to get smashed. And hot rod roundup, our shop makes it out to that every year.

I can't believe I just spent 20 minutes of my life reading this entire thread when I should have stopped after the first page.... Fong, your shop turns out some nice bikes, not quite my cup of tea, but if you like them, and you can continually sell them off to fund the next build, more power to ya! I am building my first ever complete bike, and I know some will hate it, some will love it.

As for all the ass-baggery here with the personal attacks and name calling: I gues some people never advance past 7th grade mentality..

this happened a couple of years ago in bendigo australia,,, a guy had a no milage xs650 in the crate as it came with the front wheel in the box protectively sandwiched in some how,,,, he sold it with no mileage for $15,000 australian ... i luv my bikes and most xs650,,, but spending 15,000 grand ,,,,wouldn,t you buy an R1 or a gsxr,,, out of the show room ,,, its only a thought regards oldbiker

Just trying to be funny regarding Texas. I loved the state, even Austin in its own way. But there is no work there, none, despite the (probably false) low unemployment rate data for it.

It's a different world up here though; just walk in anyplace and instantly get a job doing anything you want. They jump on you, like the good old days of the 90s.

But there's nothing to do here. I got a haircut today and the barber said "You know what you call a good-looking woman in Sidney? A tourist." Ha. Might try to get some Texas women up here who want jobs.

If you ain't in Austin brother you are just camping out.

Home Slice pepperoni at 3:00 a.m. on South Congress with a Bucket-T and a Duce Coupe parked at the curb and the prettiest girls in the world

oooh I miss that town

You just might be right about the girls. I found myself really appreciating the south of the border look, which surprised me.

The "Spaniards" as I eventually called them, are so friendly. Eye contact with a stranger and the whole thing. Not so up here "don'tcha know, you betcha." Ha.

But to credit the women here, they're small town girls, and there's a 10:1 ratio of men to women, and they're literally living in mortal fear....

Austin is the blondest town in Texas - if they ain't born that way they get that way
Houston is the boobiest town in the world for the same reason.

Las Chicas Mexicanos son muey amable, tambien Hombre, but San Antonio is the town for that scene.

Texas - 49th in education, number one in executions, but no shortage of pretty, friendly females.

Sorry to hear your boy:girl ratio is more like the Yukon

Southern hospitality which Dandan mentioned is for real. Let no one doubt that.

Very nice scoot, it is definitely an inspiration for my next bobber build. I wouldn't mind seeing some more shots of it though preferably in action. I can't visualize the riding position from the pics.......but bad ass none the less.

I really like the look of this bike and I think you guys did a great job with it. Really digging the Wassel sitting down low right on top of the engine.

If you don't mind me asking, what is envolved when you leave the triangular ugly plates in place? Do you cut them out and then weld them back in later after the hardtail has been installed or do you work around them and the TC tail just lines up?
