I spent a ton of time in the tech section for wiring but it is so many discussions on so many different situations. I have a 73 tx650 with points. I have a rotor that tests good. Brand new stator frome mikesxs. Reg/rec from tcbros. Simple key switch. The new stator has a red wire and a green wire on the brushes. uploadfromtaptalk1373925925988.jpg
The old one black and green.

The harness frome the alt is three white, one light blue(not used?), one yellow (not used), one red and one green.

This plugs into a tcbros harness that has three white, one green and two blacks that are together and split into two plugs.

I have examined and read hundreds of posts and diagrams. I am really confused now. I see a lot of diagrams but I can't find one that really matches what I have. Kick start only, points, stock rotor/stator. I am hoping someone will see this and be able to help because with all the reading and scratching my head I am confused. Lol
Plus red wire from reg/rec to batt? Black to batt? Brown to + on key?
Any help really appreciated! Thank you!

Well, let's see if this pic works...

I'm sure there's other/better pics here, all I could find right now.
If you look closely at your pic #2, you'll see that the brushes are in the wrong position.
The innermost brush in your pic needs to be moved, as oriented, to the outboard position.
The outboard brush in your pic needs to be rotated 180° and placed in the inboard position.
That makes the inboard brush the grounded brush (normally black wire).
The outboard brush, supported by only one screw, is the regulator powered line (normally green).

This arrangement is only for the `70-`79 alternators.

But ..... I don't think he's using that old alternator in pic #2 any more. Maybe it didn't work because the brushes were mounted wrong and he really didn't need a new one?

Twomany, thanks for the heads up. I found a good pic online and fixed it immediately. Makes sense because it separates the two. I just copied the old one assuming it was correct. I should have known because I am sure the PO was retarded. I swear everything on this bike was screwed by the PO and that is probably the reason the old green wire was fried.

Well spotted TwoManyXS1Bs:thumbsup:

I've always thought that this sort of problem is more likely to arise when people are instructed to join up coloured wires without actually understanding what the wires supply or ground.

Once someone understands what a wire needs to supply or ground then it doesn't matter what colour it happens to be it will be connected correctly. Just my 2cents worth

Oh, crap, did it again. Thanx, peanut, for mentioning wire colors. I had the wrong colors in that post. Edited it for the correct wire colors. Seeing those wire colors near the brushes is very difficult, especially when they're 33-43 years old and exist in that hot environment...
